first up a trial of my new airbrush & compressor - going to use the techniques for a renegade macharius so some bits didn't quite work 100% but it's definately my fave tank i've done so far. I use many of the techniques listed in FW's Model Masterclass - once you get the hang of the airbrush it's pretty simple & just a matter of practice & keeping the airbrush clean!

some of the shading on the exhaust was washed out by the camera.

tips include - mixing the paint on a water proof bottle - I used a pill bottle picked up for free from my local pharmacy (I also got some small syringes - get for transferring liquids). this avoids getting lumps of dried up paint in the system.
keep cleaning the needle - i've got some spray-on airbrush cleaner to help with this.
oil paint, even when thinned, takes ages to dry - i had to seal it with a coat of varnish before going onto the next stage.
remember to use the right paint pot - trying to diffuse oil paint with water does not work!

now heres some WIP renegades - painted really simply - foundation yellow & red with a develan wash. the metals were UC'd with bolt gun metal, then a wash of black. the rust wash was too thick & I'll have to do something to rectify. the guns are new from the forge so will remain shiney & clean!

BTW I used photobucket & an old Fuji Finepix S304 on 1meg with a home built-light tent & 2 desktop lights. the picts were cropped & auto-adjusted in windows photo gallery.

as usually all C&C welcome!

Pretty nice work on the tank sir! The only things I see that catch my eye are the glossy cannon barrels (may just be the pic) and I would drill out the exhaust stacks, otherwise it's great looking!
The figs are very nice also.

Busy somewhere, airin' out the skin jobs.

That is some pretty good work there.

How long did the tank take you considering that it was airbrushed?

I have never failed to seize on 4+ in my life!

it took 1-2 hours a night for 5 nights depending on 1, which stage i was on & 2, cleaning the airbrush before i learnt to mix the paint properly! a cheap hairdryer was a godsend

to rotarygod,
i wanted the barrels to look greasy & yes i should have drilled out the heavy bolter barrels & the exhaust but as it was a trail run & i was feeling a little lazy & raring to go with the airbrush kit on the day it arrived i didn't bother.

I can't stress this point enough. The airbrush is an amazing tool... the problem with it (other than the cost of a good airbrush & compressor) is that it's pretty daunting at first. Cleaning obviously requires more time than your standard brush, and you have to be pretty thorough, but once you get the hang of it it's pretty easy and goes much quicker. If you're interested in seeing some airbrushed marines, goto my blog (link in sig, shameless plug, sorry!).

I REALLY like the tank. Excellent work on that. It reminds me of Silent Hill (the movie and the 5th game). Grimy and evil looking... just the way it should be. I'd be very proud of that if I were you!

I like it!

The only things I would change is the Barrels of the guns, if you want them to be glossy that's your choice, but they need some contrast, or weathering, right now it looks like a black hole on your model and is really distracting from the rest of the piece.

Also in the last tank picture you need to blend out the Dev mud on the top of the sponson. But that's a minor issue

Good job and keep the pictures coming.

Ah ok, in that case you nailed it spot on. As for being lazy I totally know where you're coming from.

no its just a standard russ with an extra heavy bolter (metal but i can't remember where i got it from) stuck on to replace the the lascannon. got to love 9 HB shots & 2 twin-linked AC shots per turn!

the mud / dust on the sponsons looked thinner when i was applying it but dried looking a bit crude.

as mentioned this was an experimental piece to base my macharius scheme on - i think the was a most worthwhile experement as i learnt so much and i can go on to the bigger project with some confidence.
thanks for all your comments - keep em coming!

Just wondering why I have 10 replies from over 500 views? (I tend to get a bit paranoid over post responses - my therapist suggested I just ask folks 'Why?')

Please - my last wish is to pressure or guilt anyone in to replying to this.

However I am very proud of the tank & was looking forward to a few more C&C.

Cheers

PS to the mods - I don't mind if you lock this for treadnomancy

1) The thread's 10 days old. Hardly threadomancy.

2) I think one reason you're getting more views and less comments is because of people like me. I surf Dakka in between projects at work, and while I'm waiting for data to process. My work blocks photo hosting sites. As you are using one to host your images, all I see are little red X's where the pictures should be. When I go home at night, I rarely have time to surf Dakka and, when I do, I rarely remember to look at threads I saw red X's on. I know *I* would be more inclined to leave a comment on your work if I could see it. Hosting your images on Dakka would help that immensely.

3) Also... more hits than comments is the norm for internet postings. Check the view vs. post count on any other thread and you'll see.

Usually, when I open a thread and see the X's, I just back out & try a new one. It's rather unusual that I bothered to read any of the comments, when I couldn't compare them to an image... I think it was mention of the masterclass book that grabbed me. I was curious to see if you had more to say about it.

Hope this helps.

cheers for the tip - will re-edit post once i get the pists up on the dakka gallery.

Re the book -
it is now my bible (no honestly - it is often sat on my bedside table!)

People have reviewed it when it first came out and commented that they were disapointed that there wasn't more to how to do the basics of airbrushing. At the time i felt the same.
Now, however, since I've tried using my airbrush I feel very differently.
It's just like learning how to paint - there's the odd tip you can try - but you just need to bite the bullet & try. As the saying goes 'practice makes perfect' (not saying that the tank's perfect though - it is my 1st try). That saying, once you get the hang of the basics, it seems pretty straight forward.
The main reason to get this book is too inspire you self to see what is possible on a bog-standard GW tank. I've looked at other tanks in military modelling mags and at the time they seemed to be speaking greek (using materials & tools I'd never heard of before). The FW book does a great intro in to all the bits & pieces (including materials) so I knew what to look for & more importantly, where to look.
I even have my own tip - instead of experimenting with the expensive Tamyia or MIG weathering powders try getting a cheap box of artists' pastels & a small spice grater (cost £8 for the pastels at WH Smiths & £2 ish for the grater at Wilkingsons).
Just grate a number of the pastels up in what you think the colour you want is made up from & hey presto - I've now got rust, light dust (both used on the model) & dark mud (each filling a spare GW mixing pot) with still loads left for doing more.
In terms of content there's step-by-step on Guard tanks in the main section & pictures of more Guard tanks & some Tau craft at the rear.
Hope this is what you were after.

Cheers again

Adam
