One of the guys whom I game with regularly has started running an Ironclad dreadnought spam list, which I've been having serious trouble with.

List comp is something like:

HQ:
-Master of the Forge (Bike/Conversion Beamer)

Troops:
-8 Scouts (Camo Cloaks/Sniper Rifles)
-Tac. Squad (Flamer/ML/Razorback)
-Tac. Squad (Falmer/ML/Razorback)

Fast Attack:

-10 Assault Marines

-Landspeeder (MM/HF)
-Landspeeder (MM/HF)

Elites:

-Ironclad (Hammer/HF)

Heavy Support:

-Ironclad (Hammer/HF)
-Ironclad (Hammer/HF)
-Ironclad (Hammer/SB)

Part of my problem has been dice-related and can't be helped. I usually run a KoS army, so most of my tank-busting capabilities are in Power klaws which have been failing me spectacularly lately.

My warboss, usually my go-to guy for busting armor gets the instant death hammer of doom.

Large mobs work slightly better - takes a bit longer for them to lose combat and run like little girly-grots - but man - those fearless wounds sting.

What's the best way for Orks to counter that many AV 13 walkers? Deffkoptas with TL Rokkits?

I guess I could take some zap guns or a SAG and pray...but I don't particularly like that option.

Thanks!

Thanks for the good comments guys.

Large mobs with klaws were my first inclination - my KoS list only has one big mob(30 Shootas w/rokkits and PK), and the last game we played they charged an ironclad and spent three turns stuck in assault with it, slowly being whittled down, never managing more than a stunned result - then the game ended.
(Like I said in the original post - a good part of my problem was dice.)
At least it slowed that one down....

But lemme tell ya, the ironclad's assault launchers hurt. Orks charging in to AV 13 without their charge bonus = pain.

-Deffkoptas were the other thing I was thinking about...figured I could try outflanking and going for shots on the rear armor. I'll try and fit some in my list and see what happens.

-Tankbustas in a wagon might be worth trying, the main problem I see with them is they could be baited pretty easily with his landspeeders.

-Lootas were my previous modus operandi for walkers/light armor (although I usually only field 15), but: his sniper scouts will do their best to whittle them down until they're no longer fearless, and then pin them.

-I had never even thought of wrecking balls or boarding planks...Don't think I've ever used them period, actually. I'll give it a shot.

-Deffrollas used to be my ironclad solution. Unfortunately, I can't use them anymore as the group I play with uses the INAT FAQ for resolving rules disputes.
(Not that I don't like the INAT - I do...just not that ruling. )

I've got a game tomorrow, I'll try to fit some of the recommendations in to my list, and if he runs the ironclads again tomorrow we'll see how it works out.

Thanks again.

The warboss can be targeted by the ironclad in close combat... DCCW equates to an easy insta-kill. This is the last place you want your warboss on the receiving end.

Actually, Yakface ruled that the Dread can't make attacks when victimized by the drive by klawin'.

I'm surprised sniper scouts would scare your lootas. If you gave your lootas(x15) one turn to shoot at the scouts, it would give you 5 - 15 shots that wound on 2 and don't allow armor... even if they're in cover that's scary.

They don't need an armor save when they get a 2+ cover save from the MoF's "Bolster Defenses special rule + Camo cloaks.

With that list it makes me prioritize my targets: Do I want to go for the sniper scouts (who have a 2+ cover save) that will eventually probably pin my lootas? Or do I want to shoot down those two Land speeders which are rapidly approaching with their heavy flamers at the ready?

And yes, I realize that the INAT is not universally accepted - but as whitedragon pointed out I already mentioned that my group uses it to settle rules disputes. So it works for me.

EDIT: Sorry - didn't see the last post GBF.

Well after all that, he changed up his list and down-graded the ironclads to plain old AV 12 Multi-Melta dreads, which are significantly less intimidating.

We played Annihilation/Spearhead, and I pulled out a minor victory winning by 1 KP. I would have gotten another if I could have killed his last dread, I assaulted it with a trukk mob turn 4, knocked off all its weapons, stunned it a few times before it won combat in turn 6 and ran the mob off the board - earning it the nickname "Gimpy the Wonder Dread."

Boarding planks are handy - good way to shield the boys from those inevitable explosion results when the nob goes tank hunting. I had never used them before as I had just kind of written off all the vehicle upgrades for trukks other than rams and red paint as too expensive for such a fragile unit.

I managed to get in another game after that one versus a fairly armor-heavy Chaos marines list, and tabled them.

So, thanks for the ideas everybody!

Did you use boarding planks after all?

Yeah, although I didn't get to use them on the dreads , I used them to take care of a predator, a couple speeders, and a rhino. Worked pretty well as I didn't have to worry so much about boys biting it from the "Explodes" result.

Points I imagine. He altered the build a good bit actually.
IIRC he added in Telion, an extra land speeder, dropped the ironclads to regular dreads and just took three instead of four, and took three predators (autocannon/heavy bolters).

It ended up being a ridiculously close game with some crazy moments - my favorite one being when a trukk fired its big shoota at his Master of the Forge - actually hit him twice, both shots wounded - and he rolled for his armor saves - on the first turn.

Then I must be terrible at this game as its pretty rare for me.

Seriously though, I've only just gotten back into 40k fairly recently after a looong break (stopped playing a little bit after 3rd ed came out,)so I'm still kind of learning the ropes.

Sorry if it came off as "bragging," I meant it more as a "Thanks, that worked!" kind of statement rather than "WOOT! I AM THE BESTE!"
