Yes, they do. They're called Fenrisian(spelling?) Wolves and they're supposed to be huge and vicious.

Space Wolf characters can take them, and I think the 13th Company could take them as actual unit.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

Im seriously curious on this question. Its not just warhammer, its every fantasy
setting always have someone wearing some sort of animal skin / accessories yet they still have
the same specie of animal as companion.

Well if the animal died and it was a close companion then they could just be wearing their pelts in remembrance. I mean this is the spess muhreens were talking about here. They're not exactly PETA advocates.

It is because there are many breeds of fenrisian wolfes, and the slaying of some of them is a rite of pasage for the space wolfes. The wolfs that follow them around are a different kind of wolf.

Or so I thought.

yeap, its a right of passage, the ones they keep as pets are not the super deadly black wolves that inhabit their area. I think ragnar blackmane and logan grimnar are the only two currently with the chapter that have slain such a wolf. even though the one ragnar killed was sick and old anyway....correct me if im wrong, its been a while since i have read the space wolf novels.

The Space Wolves look at their Fenrisian wolf brothers as an animal avatar of their legion. As every supplicant becomes a Space Wolf, they go off into the wilds of Fenris to find a Fenrisian wolf and kill it.

They respect and hold them in high esteem, but if I were a Fenrisian wolf I'd much prefer if they were called the "Space Salmon". Fething decorate your armor with pieces of someone elses anatomy, geez.

This goes for the Salamanders as well. Brothers keeping a good lizard down.

This is actually a common form of veneration for an animal that is held in high regard by the native population.

Crazy as it may sound to you, every indigenous population shares in this tradition of taking a part of the animal as a sign of respect to it. It's a way of giving thanks to an animal for giving up its life so you may live, or a way of showing your enemies that you are strong enough to kill a powerful animal and thus should be avoided.

Look up some info on Native Americans or any Native people, really. Totems aren't just something in World of Warcraft. :p

This is true. That and because natives would use as much as they could from the carcass in respect for the animal and out of necessity.

I like Space Marines – but not for the reasons you may think:
Descended from the progeny of the most advanced human in existence, still devolve into mindless spiritual quackery.
Despite their strength and combat abilities, they are still surprisingly frail of mind and spirit.
They are fighting a losing battle. The Emperor is at deaths door, Chaos continues to rise up everywhere, and they continue to repress the natural evolution of humankind by hunting down psykers. Yet they still sally forth and fight, grasping for that Pyhrric victory.
I've always appreciated the gothic aesthetic they use, especially that of the Dark Angels and Black Templars.

Having said that, I truly believe that one day the Tau will rule the universe.

iirc, Ragnar Blackmane got his last name because he killed a Fenrisian Blackmane Wolf with his bare hands. The Blackmanes are even bigger than the normal Fenrisian Wolves (which still are like 5' high at the shoulder). iirc, a SW may only wear the pelt of an animal he slayed with his bare hands.

Sit young pup as I retell the Ritual of the Hunt.

As you know, The Great Continent of Asaheim lies atop the world, defying the Wolf's Eye every Season of Fire, for where others are consumed by the sea, Asaheim lies eternal. Only the hardiest of life survives, a fitting place for The Sons of Russ to make their hearth, the finest of The Emperors Angels of Death.

Among the hardiest of life upon this barren land is the Fabled Fenrisin Wolf. These creatures are legendary beasts, on and even beyond Fenris. Russ himself was suckled by one of these magnificent creatures. Even one as Long in the Fang as myself still find myself enthralled by their magnificence. Many stand as tall at the shoulder as even the tallest Son of Russ, many even taller still. Teeth as long and sharp as any dagger, their jaws powerful enough to crush even a mighty Space Marines skull in an instant!
They are intelligent, more so than any normal man. Many say this is madness, but I have seen for myself how they live, hunt and die in battle. Beasts? They are no more beasts than you or me. Russ Himself was suckled by a She-Wolf in his youth, so the Saga tells. And their eyes, those thinking, yellow eyes. Were I to go old and mad and live to be five thousand years old, I will never forget those eyes.

But alas, the fond memories of Youth detract me young pup, The Ritual of the Hunt is the matter at hand here. As you know, we Fenrisians are a proud race, and quite rightly so. Sometimes those already held in great esteem by their Brothers and Lords feel the urge to further prove themselves, by bending the a mighty pack of these wolves to their will and taking their place as their Pack Alpha. There is of course but one way to do such a thing, and that it to seek and find a Pack, no easy feat in itself. Even the best of the Space Wolves have little chance of tracking these creatures, and will more than likely be tracked by them!

Once the Prayers to Russ have been intoned, whomever seeks to dominate a pack of these Wolves must shed his Arms and Armour, for there is no Honour in using them. The wolf is naked and Unarmed, why should It challenge one who is not likewise!
Regardless, once encountered, he must challenge the Alpha Male for the leadership of his pack. This is a falsehood though young ones, for it is more often than not the Alpha Male who challenges us! With their bare hands, our Brothers must fight this majestic beast. Lest you forget that the pack leaders are the strongest, fittest and biggest of their kin, a match if not moreso in strength of any Brother! Victory is in no way guaranteed, and many Sons of Russ have fallen to a worthy opponent. There is no shame in it and their names are sung as loud as any hero!

Should he be victorious, he shall command the pack as his own, following him as their absolute leader. The fallen Pack leader is not pitied, or mourned, but Honoured and remembered! Many sagas sing of these heroic wolves and their kin, their pelts carried by their slayer as tribute. Many pelts come however from those exceptional individuals taken from the packs to be taken across the Stars to fight alongside their master as Brothers. Should they be slain by the Vile Enemies of the Emperor they are mourned, their names remembered by the Rune Priests for Time Eternal and their Hides worn as fitting tribute to those we would call kin!

That, my boy, is why we wear them.

I would think that hey haev wolves as pets, and when one gets old and dies, they venerate it by making a pelt out of it (like some crazies who stuff their dead animals).

Here's what a lot of people are misreading and other such garbage from Space Wolves. When Ragnar went out into the wilderness, he had to eventually find food. Well, along comes a Fenrisian Blackmane Wolf, which was sick and injured, and he killed it, though it was quite and effort, he was only armed with a spear made from a branch and stone. He skinned it, wore it, and ate the meat. Many other SW go out and do the same thing to the Fenrisian wolves because it proves them as a warrior. It isn't so much an established act, but they do it as a right of passage of sorts. They keep them as beasts of war as well because they are powerful beasts and the stories are of Russ himself being raised by wolves. They're the brothers of the Space Wolves, so while it is a challenge and a passage to kill them, they also are as much a warrior-brother as another space marine.

"From the fires of Betrayal unto the blood of revenge we bring the name of Lorgar, the Bearer of the Word, the favored Son of Chaos, all praise be given to him. From those that would not heed we offer praise to those who do, that they might turn their gaze our way and gift us with the Boon of Pain, to turn the Galaxy red with the blood, and feed the hunger of the Gods."

-Excerpt from the Three Hundred and Forty-First

Book of Epistles of Lorgar
