Hey guys, I am looking at making some custom battlewagons for my Lost and the Orky army, and I have a few questions about what people consider an acceptable range of size for such things.
I know this sounds a lot like a rules request, and thus YMDC territory, but since I am not using the GW battlewagon models at all, and this army won't be GW enough to be tourney legal anyway, it is really a lot more of a general perception question.
Now, I am shooting to have all the battlewagons around LR size, but that's where it starts to get fuzzy. I want to have two killcannon wagons with hard case and one opentopped, death rollin' wagon for my nob's and boss to rock around in.

Here's two photos of what I have going so far, with Land Raider for scale.

Now, the tank chasis with the green gun is one gun wagon, and as you can see it is nearly exactly the same size as the LR. Infact, with the little side skirts it has, it probably will be within a tenth of an inch. The trouble lies with the other two.
The little one I got as a possible transport wagon, but really overerestimated the size. It is not much bigger than a trukk, but enough so that I am not terribly keen on trying to cut it down to fit, especially since it has cool tracks in the back that would be tough to fix. It also has a really cool missile launcher that goes on the back, so I was thinking maybe with a few bolt on plates for the side and front to bulk it out a little, it would make a nice killcannon wagon, if a bit on the small size. It would end up being a bit longer than a Vindicator, and a slight bit narrower.
The big one, I purchased as a possible Baneblade conversion, but never really finished it since the size was a bit too small to be satisfying. (The mental struggle to resist the "mom joke" there was immense.) However, I am thinking it would make a really cool battlewagon for the Word Bearer terminators and lord if I put a flat dias platform up top with a big shrine in the back and a ramp/podium in the front. All 6 terminators could then stand up there and roll around looking pimp before they got out and smashed things up. Put some tentacles and armored maws up front for the death rolla and I would have a big scary ride. The trouble is, it would be BIG. It is fully and inch and a half longer than the land raider, and probably 3/4" wider. It would, however, be a lot longer than it is wide (obviously.)

So what do you think? Are the other two pushing the limits of good taste, or will they be cool enough to justify the somewhat loose range of size?

Well, you'd be right, if you ignored the fact that there's an official model/footprint for it now.

Well, there is the new model for it, and there is also the old model:

As long as you are between those two then you should be fine. You get some modeling advantage from a smaller truck (much easier to get cover, can squeeze through terrain without a difficult ground check) however if you have used what you've got and orkified them there should be no problem.

Played against someone a couple of weeks ago with 3 of the old truck and they are ridiculously small.

Yea, the old ork trukks are teeny tiny; mine are modeled to the new size (one being a new one).
The battlwagons now, how big are the new one? Bigger than a LR? I have yet to see one in person whole.

To give you an idea of the trukks, here's the P&M blog for the army:

The land of cotton.

The new Battlewagon is a little narrower than a Land Raider and the same length. It's also just a wee bit taller.

Game wise you run into issues if you get longer than a Land Raider. When you move onto the board from Reserve the model itself is right at 6" long... that's just big enough to get the whole thing on the board at Combat Speed. Anything longer and it's difficult to get it onto the table without the back side of it hanging off unless you are moving Cruising Speed. Just a thought.

Personally I'd try to keep it Land Raider length and play with the width and height if you want to vary things.
