I was inquiring that if I were to make my own chapter, could I use any of the space marine codex's. Like if I want to use the DA or BT?

Yes, you just call it a 'counts as' army. Do you own colours and stuff, and use the rules and characters out of an existing codex.

What you can't do is pick and choose the best bits from several codexes.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

If you don't want any problems whatsoever use the Space Marines codex.
We have all heard horror stories about TFG!

Oli: Can I be an orc?
Everyone: No.
Oli: But it fits through the doors, Look!

Nah, you should be fine to use any codex. But, of course, you have to pick one codex and stick to it...If any questions it, just say they're a Dark Angels Successor, or Space Wolves Successor.

I agree about picking and sticking with a codex....for a single game.

Thats the beauty of Do-it-yourself chapters.

The next game you play you can choose a different list to use.

As long as you're clear before the game starts. If I'm playing your awesomely painted DIY Flesh Shakers army and they're Blood Angels against me. I'd expect them to be Blood Angels the next time you used them unless you were very clear beforeand that you were using the Ultramarines Codex
