Hello all. I think I may be something of an oddity here (which I suspect might be quite an achievement!). I have never played the 40K tabletop game, and yet I am entirely besotted with 40K and its attendant "fluff". Brief history: a looong time ago I had the game "Space Crusade" for the lamentable Amstrad CPC464. It was quite good fun, for the time, and featured some intriguingly named characters ("Imperial Fists? BLOOD Angels?! What's all this?") but I never pursued my interest in them.

Then, in the days of the PS1, I had the game "Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels", which I just loved - so atmospheric, so intense. In fact I've recently bought it again, and am loving it afresh. And this time I won't lose any battlebrothers as I play - no Blood Angel will die under my command!

Many years later, on a whim, I picked up the Space Wolves omnibus - and that was it. I quickly moved on to the Ultramarines omnibus, and even used eBay to get an ancient copy of the novel "Space Marine". I have since become entirely fascinated with the 40K milieu, and have recently powered through all of the available Horus Heresy novels which just intensified this obsession - the books are of variable quality, but some of them are DAMN good and the overall atmosphere of the books was a real shock. All I knew about the Chaos forces was that they are baddies, I never appreciated that there are two sides to the story, especially when it comes to the likes of the Emperor's Children. Their story was unexpectedly poignant and sad. And still, I have SO much yet to learn! I want to read it all, every bit of 40K published - and the more fanatical, the better (hence my choice of Black Templars as probably my favourite Chapter).

Anyway, rambling now - my point is, I'm purely in it for the fluff. Is that OK, or is this place strictly for the tabletop folk? I enjoy watching what you've done with your paintjobs etc, if that counts in my favour.

You always want something. You know, in Tibet, if they want something, do you know what they do? They give something away...
Do they? That must be why they're such a dominant global power.

Yeah I'm more of a fluff guy myself, and modeling/painting, I don't actually play that often.

To be honest, as with Thousandth Son before me, I'm more of a closet painter and sculptor. Most of the folk in my local GW are buttock-clenchingly embarrassing. Seems you've tapped into the facet of GW that won't break the bank, or your soul.

I really should be spending my time more constructively.

It's alright to be in it for the fluff, but it would benefit you more if you were to play at least one game, just to get a feel for it.

Thanks all for the welcomes folks, except to Pyrus who gets a "buíochas" instead - I am from Manchester, but gladly of Irish stock, so the greeting was a nice touch. And it's a pleasant surprise to find I'm not the only one who fluffs rather than plays.

And - all too predictably - Roze has immediately become my favourite poster here, in my short acquaintance with the place. I bet that happens a lot...

I'm mostly in it for the fluff too, although I do play, rarely. Welcome.
