Hey-

Thinking of playing a 40k event at one of the bigger stores. In reading over their composition points rules, I feel like I'm pretty much screwed for playing Tyranids.

Example: You get points if each unit is a named/theme unit. -- TYRANIDS DON'T HAVE INDIVIDUALS - IF I NAME THEM, I LOSE POINTS FOR NOT FOLLOWING ARMY FLUFF... CAN'T WIN THAT ONE.

Example: You get points if you do not take more than the 1 required HQ or Elites -- TYRANIDS ARE RELIANT ON SYNAPSE.. THE ONLY CREATURES WITH SYNAPSE ARE ELITES AND HQ - IF I ONLY TAKE ONE SYNAPSE CREATURE... WELL... GAME OVER - IF I TRY TO GET MY SYNAPSE, I GET DOCKED POINTS

Example: You get points for taking lots of core units --I'M USING TONS OF TROOPS, BUT THEY ARE LARGE UNITS - I.E. I'M FOLLOWING THE TYRANID FLUFF AND USING LARGE/SWARMING TYPE UNITS. SO THOUGH I HAVE NEARLY 50 TROOPS - THEY ARE ONLY 3 UNITS... I LOSE POINTS.

There are a few other examples, but I think you get the idea. A lot of this tourney feels like it's based on army composition... so...

How am I supposed to compete there? I hate to feel like I'm whining, but I really want to play this tourney and it feels like the army comp rules really really favor some armies while heavily punishing others. Am I seeing it wrong???

would appreciate any suggestions, ideas, etc.

No big deal.

On the naming thing, just name what you think the imperium might name them.
EG. instead of hormagaunts, screamerkiller, or deathleapers.
instead of just a lictor take a page out of dawn of war II and call it lictor alpha
for genestealers you can name them something that has been mentioned here, chromosome theives.
I wouldn't worry about the naming as much. you can even just name them like hormagaunt alpha, bravo whatever.

For HQs I've seen plenty of nid lists that don't use two HQs and still seem to do well. Esp. If your going for large troop squads just keep one model within synapse range and your good to go. And 50 models for troops isn't a whole.

I think comp scores suck, because they can be so subjective.

But just sit down and look around at some fluff and you'll get it.

Also you don't need to use the caps lock so much. We'll get the point.

Another perfect example of why Comp is Epic Fail.

Post the comp rules/missions/points values and we can help you break it!

Off the top of my head-
1. A Hive tyrant with two-three guards is next to impossible to bring down, especially if you run gaunts in front of it to give you a cover save. You can give the tyrant a 2+ save if you want to muck about with wound allocation too.
2. Zoanthropes can do synapse from the HS slots.
3. A couple of smaller units with 'without number' are generally a really good buy for objhective scoring anyway. You can easily break up your larger units a bit for more troop slots used, or use a few genestealers.

To be fair, a troop heavy nid army is generally sub optimal in a comp free environment anyway. Comp is just a different set of rules to build your army to.

I agree with daggermaw on the naming squads-call them alpha, bravo, beta, or an IG nickname from the codex, like anklebiters for rippers, critters for gaunts, hellbats for gargoyles, brains for thropes and so on. on the synapse, i play nids and i dont field any warriors, just a ton of thropes and a flyrant.

have you thought about winged warriors? they are fast attack but still synapse

freaky

I know. I'm evil.
I saw weird stuff in that place last night. Weird, strange, sick, twisted, eerie, godless, evil stuff. And I want in.
