I was playing someone that augured if synapse gave immunity to instant death by only weapons that double strength and that they are still able to die from instant death from ability s or(for lack of a better word) spell like things.

I think they are but I'm still trying to figure out how he thinks what he is shooting at me is not a weapon.

See the Tyranid FAQ. Synapse grants immunity to Instant Death, the game rule. Instant Death is caused by a) anything with S >= 2T; or b) anything that says it causes Instant Death.

Note that some "autokill" effects don't invoke Instant Death. This includes, for example, Daemonhunters Force Weapons.

But does the rule say "immune to instant death caused by weapons that are double toughness"? If so, there is a debate because Instant Death not caused by weapons of double toughness is caused by the same mechanism but one could argue that, despite the fact there was no special ID out there at the time, the extra "superfluous" wording creates a special situation.

Sort of like the Necron codex says that a Destroyer Body makes a Lord toughness 6, and "thus will not suffer Instant Death from weapons that are double its toughness." Only in this case this is an accurate description/clarification of the Destroyer Body's abilities as it can be ID by other methods.

Now I'm not saying that synapsed guys can be ID'd by regular weapons, as that was clearly the intent and the double toughness just clarification if it exists at all, but if that wording does exist it creates a debate.

If the only way to cause "Instant Death" (note captials with it being a proper term not a phrase) when the tyranid codex was released was to have a weapon with double the targets toughness:

Then Id say a synapse creature would be immune to any ID weapon, as it is now 5ed and the term "Instant Death" has been update (along with combat, blast rules etc)

If there were multiple ways to cause ID when the tyranid codex was released then nothing has essentially changed from then till now where-by the iron-will of the Hive Mind allows creatures to (only) ignore instant-deathing from weapons with strength twice the targets toughness.

Look, I wasn't kidding when I said to go read the Tyranid FAQ.

Tyranids within Synapse range as described above (including the Synapse Creature itself) are not affected by the Instant Death rule. Note that this does not apply to Ripper Swarms.

I hated it, but pre-FAQ I lost models to ID that wasn't based on s vs t.

Nice enough now though.

Still sort of miss transports though. . .
