For me it was when a bunch of ghouls ambushed me in a metro tunnel. I jumped right out my skin when it happened.

I'm not that far into the game yet (currently working on getting the satelite dish for three dog) but what really made me jump out of my seat were the rad scorpions I encoutered in a cave somewhere....

Though Fallout 3 was extremely enjoyable, I don't remember a single moment where I was genuinely scared.

Some parts were a bit unnerving (The part in the Springvale Elementary School, where you see the corpses strung up in the genuine raider fashion comes to mind), but I think that the awesome Pip-boy radio desensitizes you to anything that would normally make you jump if you encountered them in any other game. In a good way.

The Centaurs are some of the most grotesquely designed enemies I've ever seen, but I love them anyway.

Wasn't that scary a game, even that haunted vault was pretty weak. If I had to name one then it would be DC sanctuary as mentioned above, not scary but the DCs just pop out in front of you.

See, for me the "scare" factor wasn't so much an OMG WTH WAS THAT! like Fear or Project Origin.

It was a "Oh sweet Jesus, what the heck did I just walk into?"

The fight at the steps of the White House between Talon Company Mercs+Super Mutants?

Right up there.

The Enclave v. Super Mutants fight you'll see there later?
Also up there.

My absolute best moment, to date, remains on using a Stealth Boy to get to a decent vantage point as the Enclave and Super Mutants started really laying into each other.

And then launching a mini-nuke at the very middle of it.

What a fantastic chunk of XP that was

I didn't have a really scary moment in the game, but my favorite moment was when I had knocked down a super mutie and then I made vats strike and the mutants head happened to be right under my super sledge and soon head was blown into millions of pieses flying around the room in slowmotion. THAT WAS FRIGGIN AWSOME!!!!!!!!!

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.

If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in.

Not sure i encountered any really scary moments, as Chrysaor686 plenty of un-nerving stuff about though.

Suppose it occasionally made me jump, when you wandering about the wastelands listening to the radio and something suddenly jumps out at you

The Old Olney power works. Deathclaw's lurk there. I've also had my share of scares from Yaoh Guai attacking me at night. As a low-level it can be quite fatal.

For me, at early levels on my first play through it was always running into fights that I just didn't have the firepower to handle, and subsequently being extremely careful wandering around the wastes to avoid getting torn to shreds by the next slavering radioactive nightmare to come tearing around the next corner and rip my head off. I feared the nuclear wastland.

Now on lvl 20 on my second playthrough after I've learned to deal with everything, I'm laughing off deathclaws and one hit killing them with the Reservists Rifle from 3 hundred yards away outside of VATS with a small guns skill of twenty something, just because I've got the perks that make criticals more frequent and nastier. I'm running around and punching things to death with the deathclaw gauntlet for fun when my unarmed skill is even lower.

Then I actually whip out the Energy Weapons and Explosives I built my character to use and vaporize/blow to itty-bitty-bloody pieces every unlucky sob who so much as looks at me crossways. My frag grenades do more damage then my missile launchers. My flipping bottlecap mines do 800 damage. The most terrifying encounters should be with super mutant behemoths, and all I have to do is make a pile of bottle caps mines with some frag mines for fun, and pop one with some piddling little .32 pistol to get his attention and walk over the explosive surprise like a big brainless 'tard.

I hope the DLC adds some challenge.

Edit: Dunwich Building was cool, but there was so much they could have done with it. I was disappointed when I got to the bottom of it.

The Old Olney Sewers were pretty scary the first time, since it's your basic cramped sewer except that all the enemies are Deathclaws that take up the entire tunnel and leave you no maneuvering room. The first time, I had gotten down a system of setting down a bottlecap mine with a frag mine on top to make sure, then rounding the corner and tagging one of the uglies with the dart gun so he wouldn't lunge right over the mines and take no damage, which they tend to do. Felt really cool to go hunting the nastiest things on two legs like that.

I think Yao Guai are worse then Death Claws because you can't Dart them to slow them down. Making their lair much more deadly (and scary) then the Death Claw Sanctuary.

Centaurs creep me out. Don't know exactly why.

I can tell you one of the saddest for me...

Busting my ass to get the Ghouls into Ten Penny tower peacefully and finding out that Roy ending up butchering all of the Humans anyway. Even that nice old Daring Dashwood. Of course finding Argyle's corpse in Rockopolis and knowing Daring got him killed I guess I should chalk it up to Karma.

Needless to say I killed Roy immediately and now I can't step foot in Ten Penny Tower without getting shot at. They don't seem to know the 72 hour rule there.

I like talking to MacReady the best of anyone in the DC Wasteland. That kid is hilarious!

Sometimes, you just can't win no matter what you do... which is why I killed everyone on both sides of that equation. "Good... bad... I'm the guy with the gatling laser."

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake;

Best moment in Fallout 3?

Mysterious Stranger perk + Vats on a Super Mutant Behemoth. I lol'd.

Next best was something my wife done.

She had the fat man and went to VATS. It immediately put her on an Enclave Officer. 0% chance of hitting. So, she moves to the closer Enclave Soldier, 63% chance of hitting. She fires, the nuke goes over the soldier and lands next to the Officer. 0% my ass.

I think the bit that made me crap myself was probably in The Pitt DLC.

You read a log about how a foreman at the steel works was being increasingly pressured by the workers to get rid of the new Protectrons that could work harder and better than them. This would threaten their jobs of course - so one day a bunch of them ambush a protectron and beat it up with crowbars. The other Protectrons go mental, and just burn them. The foreman can't control them, and the log ends with something like "...oh gak, I can hear them walking outside." (This is in a broom cupboard)

So you exit the terminal, and back out, and you hear the clanking footsteps getting closer and closer down the hallway... Balls.

Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.
No soldier's paid to kick against His powers.
We laughed - knowing that better men would come,
And greater wars: when each proud fighter brags
He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags.

But Protectrons are not very tough at all and with the right Perks and the Terrible Shotgun or Lincoln Repeater, they are easy, peasy, lemon squeezey.

Now if they were Sentry Bots! Yikes!

Really? I just used my bog standard plasma gun, no problem at all, it was the big ass bot that was the problem.

Anyone picked up that distress signal out in the wastes? The sewer entrance is hard to find, but wht's down there was pretty saddening.
