i got the old lizard battalion for christmas and finally got around to painting them, anyways i started off with the skinks and im just not happy with them. i know im not the greatest painter around, or even close, but i was wondering if any of you had any ideas on how to make them look a little bit better besides become a better painter. Also, i know its hard to see in the pictures, but the sheilds are just plain green, any ideas on what to do with them?
thanks in advance, your feed back will be greatly appreciated.
sorry for the poor picture quality

Hard to tell from the pics.
There are some great articles/FAQs on dakka re. improving them (even with the most basic equipment).
Take the time to read through+ experiment.
It looks like you could highlight the skin a few tones lighter, it looks a kittle flat at the moment. (Add 33%white/66%yellow to your green skin tone.)
Shields should definately be a different colour. (The world is your oyster here)
Also pick out the crests. Maybe in a yellow/orange/yellowy orange.
Metals look a little flat/ clean. They could do with a wash and hard highlight/drybrush .
Hope this helps or it may be nonsense.
Let us know how you get on!

This sort of thing. Shows some good contrasting colours.
The wattle is a peachy, salmony orange. Could look good on the crest.
There is also some aqua/turquoise in there (perhaps for the shield?).
The lizard pictured is a Green Anole (Anolis Carolina).
Google images if you need more reference pics/ colour variation.

im not sure where to exactly find this, but when you highlight do you get a dry brush with really minimal paint on it and just brush it over the first coat?

No, a highlight is taking a brush and a slightly lighter color (the main mixed with white usually) and painting a small line around the edges.
secondly, your skink looks very good for what i assume to be a first timer. my only suggestion besides highlighting is changing the shield color.

The raised bits of the flesh.
This is an extreme example but you can see a definate change in tone on the raised parts of the biceps, veins, pecs, abs etc.
Also Shoulders, shoulder blades Jaw lines and brow ridges.

for better pictures try not to zoom in that much.
Pictures wil be further but for color scheme it maybe better to have a clearer and not blurry foto.
Harder to look for us maybe, enlarging my help after wards.
