Are familiars limited to 1per type per army? Reason I ask is they are not actually 'named' magic items...

I think that sence you buy them from the magic items list that thay are magic items. As far as I know only scrolls can be duped. O and warp stones for the rats.

Only Scrolls and Stones are non-unique. Familiars are unique items and only one can be taken.

NM is absolutely right. They are magic items and nothing in their description indicates you may take duplicates ala scrolls or stones.
