I'm planning my year long project. I'm going to build and paint the entire 2nd company in the SM codex (that's the plan anyway). My big problem in this process is trying to figure out what transports to give the squads. I'm not huge into the fluff side of things, and really have no idea. Anybody give me a idea? Landraiders, razorbacks, rhinos, or drop pods? Or is it a combination of all of the above.

The army is going to be:
1 Command squad with Sicarius
1 Chaplain
2 Dreadnoughts
2 Devastator Squads (10 men in each)
2 Assault Squads (10 men in each)
6 Tactical Squads (various weapons)

Thanks in advance for any help on this matter.

You mean the one represented in the Codex?

Get Rhinos AND Drop Pods if you want to be extra authentic, as they probably use both.

Otherwise, mix and match.

Yes the one represented in the codex. Do you know by chance, fluff wise, the ratio of drop pods to rhinos. Even more specific, which squads use what?

Fluffwise no company has drop pods. Pods are a part of the battle barge or strike cruiser that the marines are transported in.
I think a battle barge can transport three companies plus their gear and a strike cruiser can transport a single one.
The codex lists the UM battle barges as the: Octavius, Caesar, and Severian.
The 8 strike cruisers of the fleet are not named.

To get planetside marines use either drop pods or thunderhawk ships. Apparently the UM have 31 of these but I have no idea how many the big space ships can take but probably enough to drop the whole company and their supporting gear at once so probably no more than a dozen though these are not part of the company but belong to the chapter's fleet.

A thunderhawk gunship can take 30 normal marines, 15 termies, 10 bikes or three dreds or some combination like a dred and 20 marines.
A thunderhawk transport (FW model) can take two rhino sized tanks or a landraider.

As for vehicles, a company doesn't have any unless you include dreds. The second company of the UMs has two dreds (brs Agnathio and Ultracius). Rhinos and Razorbacks belong to the motorpools of the chapter armoury and are assigned to companies depending on what their needs are.

So if you want vehicles then decide what mission these guys are on. If the whole company is being used to thrust into enemy lines then you'd need at least eight rhinos to transport the tactical and devastator squads and either a rhino or razorback to transport the HQ squad and captain (this is what comes in the SM battle company box). The two assault squads with their jetpacks would be used on the flanks of the company as it advanced and for scouting for ambushes. A company in the field would also want at least one other rhino for carrying the wounded and extra ammunition. It may need another two so that the assault squads can remove their packs and travel in safety.
That means a dozen vehicles may be needed and that doesn't include the dreds being transported. I suspect a thunderhawk would be assigned for the exclusive use of the company though if the entire company were deployed at once as they can transport both dreds quickly and remove the wounded to the medicae wards on the ships in orbit.

So that makes around 10 rhinos, 1 razorback and a thunderhawk gunship.

If the company is just being landed into the middle of battle by drop pod you will need 13 pods. 10 for the squads, one for the HQ and two for the dreds, unless your assault guys have jump packs and then you need 11 pods and a thunderhawk to deliver the two assault squads.

I forsee an expensive year ahead.

Rhinos and transports tend to be allocated to a battle company based on the mission. So in some cases they would use Rhinos and others they would use Drop Pods or even Thunderhawks!

Why not take a look at the Apocolypse Battle Company (which I actually bought) it comes with "standard" Battle Company vehicles....

The standard battle company is very nice. Everything you need for your battle company minus Sicarius. Cadbren is about right. I can't say he is right on the thunderhawks. but everything else is correct. follow his lead and you will have a VERY nice battle company in no time! hope this helps you!

I'm pretty sure that Rhinos are permenantly assigned to the Battle Companies, actually. Dreadnoughts, bikes, and land speeders, too. Tanks are assigned on a per mission basis friom the Armoury.

That's great info....thanks for the help. Anybody know if Calgar would lend one of his MANY landraiders to the cause?

It's not his call. The Master of the Armoury (Fennias Maxim, IIRC) assigns Land Raiders to companies on an "as needed" basis. Presumably Captain Sicarius requests a Land Raider, and if one is available, he can use it for however long he needs it.
