I have a pretty sizeable Tau army that I havent used in quite awhile. I currently am running Orks at various points levels and was scrounging up some Dark Angels to play in a 750pts game just for the heck of it. I used to love the Tau, but the whole Jump-Shoot-Jump tactic was getting a little boring and obvious. I was curious if anyone who's heavy into the Tau could recommend some army builds that may not TOTALLY utilize this tactic, though some use of it is probably necessary, if not still a good idea.

Thanks!

There's always the holy-emperor-they're-actually-coming-closer/holy-emperor-it's-raining-crisis-suits charging army of fury....

XV8's
- Twin-linked fusion blasters, target arrays (53)
- Twin-linked flamers, gun drones (51)
- Plasma rifles, flamers, multi-tracker (54)
- Fusion blasters, plasma rifles, multi-tracker (62) - for those annoying 3+ saves...

Cheap suits supported by railguns, maybe piranhas if you're lax on the KP. You've got your anti-tank, anti-infantry, anti-heavy infantry, counter-charge etc...

It's definitely different

And no, I don't run a list like this, I just made it up now...though now it seems mighty tempting...

(Behemoth - 2,000 Points Painted)

(Alpha Legion - 2,000 Points Painted)
- Favourite Opponent - Local RTT Dec. 2018

(Vior'la Sept - 1,000 Points Painted)
- Medusa V Veterans, Konor Veterans

(Steel Legion - 1,000 Points Painted)

Don't worry, that doesn't work any more thanks to TLoS rules changes.

I'm not a big fan of the crisis suits myself.

However, I do enjoy the my version of the gunline Here is my 1500 point list:

Shadowsun (175)

Firewarrior X6 Devilfish with smart missiles, multitracker, target array (180)

Firewarrior X6 Devilfish with smart missiles, multitracker, target array (180)

Firewarrior X12 (120)

Firewarrior X12 (120)

Firewarrior X12 (120)

Kroot X10 Kroot Hounds X9 (124)

2 Broadsides with target arrays (160)

2 Broadsides with target arrays (160)

2 Broadsides with target arrays (160)

The firewarriors sit in front of the broadsides to provide cover saves and fire. Not too close to prevent template fun.

The devilfish either load up the other 12 warriors and become scorning devilfish always staying out of assault range but hopefully moving less 6 inches to fire both weapons.

The kroot infilitrate into cover and provide the speedbump, don't be afraid to charge with 27 int. 5 attacks.

Shadowsun deals with deep striking or outflanking units and the gunline just keeps firing.

Shas'o, TL PR, SG, Iridium Armour, 2 shield drones

3 x XV8 Shas'ui, TL + BK, TL PR, SG, Gun Drone, Shield Drone

18 Firewarriors
3 Devilfish, SMS, TA, DP, MT

3 Hammerheads, railgun, BC, DP, MT

Comes in at 1470. 6 very hard to kill skimmers, lots of anti armour and MEQ killing. In 5e firewarriors just aren't as survivable as they used to be. This build is quick, survivable and has plenty of flexible firepower.

For the railgun is the still the bets gun in the game.

I know this post isn't here for this reason, but I would drop 4 Kroot Hounds and put Disruption Pods on your Devilfish. You are already putting TAs, MT, and SMS on it, might as well spend the 10 points to make them infinitely more surviveable.

I go with a horde of Kroot and Broadsides:

Crisis Suit Commander w/missile pod, plasma rifle, multi-tracker, reserves thingy
6 Fire Warriors w/Devilfish with smart missiles + disruption pod
20 Kroot, 10 Hounds
20 Kroot, 10 Hounds
20 Kroot, 10 Hounds
20 Kroot, 10 Hounds
20 Kroot, 10 Hounds
3 Broadsides w/multi-tracker, leader has targeting array
3 Broadsides w/multi-tracker, leader has targeting array
3 Broadsides w/multi-tracker, leader has targeting array

Works better than you'd think.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

Not to derail this thread completely, but how do your broadsides provide any templates? Only Hammerhead railguns give you submunitions.

OT - If you don't like JSJ-ing suits, try mechtau. Fish mounted FW's backed up by 3 Hammerheads. Works just like a mechdar army but with higher strength/longer range weaponry (no psyker support though )

While you sleep, they'll be waiting...

I rarley use kroot and I always seem to end on the winning end. My friend this is what I say to you.

Marker lights
Skyrays
Firewarriors
Hammerheads
XV-88's

As the Tau you do not need to assault, you have range on yoru side, use it. 72" of very mean and crazy Rail-guns is VERY mean.

I think a lot of people have forgotten just how to use tactics. The Tau have some fast skimmers which can give themselves cover saves. Take advantage of this!!

Pirahna units with flechete launchers are your friend Give them Fusion blasters, take them in big groups, don't worry about targeting arrays.

small minimum sized troop squads with warfish are also good.
