I got this idea after unearthing a lone space marine from my bitz box.


The first thing he saw when he opened his eyes was the sky. Red. Blood Red. The same colour that was splattered all over his armour - blood, but not his. With a grunt, he pushed over the piece of Rhino hull lying on top of him, sending the dead cultist draped over it rolling to the ground.

The health rune in his helmet blinked once in greeting before disappearing. His body was unhurt. His squad wasn't. To his right, Captain Ramseo laid sprawled on the dust, surrounded by the broken corpses of many cultists. He counted the rest of his squad among the dead, littered around the burnt out husk of the Rhino, even Sergeant Laert. Quickly, he flicked on his coms while scanning the battlefield for movement.

"This is Brother Theos, alpha squad, come in...."

Silence.

"This is Brother Theos, alpha squad, I repeat..."

Silence.

Further down the gentle, dusty slope, Theos could see the other two burned out Rhinos. Twenty noble marines, dead. The chapter's Predators, "the Wrath" and "the Fury" lay smoldering, side by side. Brother Damosk leaned unmoving against an Imperial Leman Russ tank, his dreadnought's fist deeply imbedded in its hull. Rising to a crouch, Theos saw more than one jump-pack silhouette. So Omega squad had met the same fate.

They had counted on flanking and routing the cult forces before they reached Navoc. They had not counted on an Imperial armour company in the sector to defect to the cultists.

On the ground, to his left was his bolter. To the north, sixty kilometers ahead, was the city of Navoc, under siege from Chaos. Brother Theos knew what was required of him.

He froze. Out of the corner of his helmet - movement. A squad of remaining culttists picking through the battlefield dead.

Navoc lay ahead, but Theos knew what he had to do first.

Those would have to be some pretty strong cultists to take out all those Space marines.

These cultists must have sacrificed alot of dogs and cats for that fighting prowess... They sacrifice dogs and cats don't they...

No, they offer blood sacrifices or souls of POW.

*Throws hand over head while making a swooshing sound*
