I'm pretty new to the game so this may be a silly question, but I'm trying to figure something out.

I picked the Dark Angels as my army to start with and I really like the look and background of them, but I picked up the new space marines codex and I like a couple of the new things introduced there. What I'm wondering is, can I new use units like the Master of the Forge, Thunderfire cannon, or the land raider redeemer in my dark angels army or am I only able to field what's listed in the DA codex?

Another question is do I need to start adjusting my unit point values to the values listed in the new SM codex for things that aren't DA specific, but generally universal to all space marine chapters (mostly vehicles/transports) or do I stick to the DA codex point costs.

No, not without the consent of your opponent. Which is pretty redundant as EVERYTHING can be allowed with opponent consent.

No, stick to the pointvalues and rules in you codex.

Generally speaking, from a 'friendly' point-of-view, if your opponent is content to let you use them, then that is fine. If your opponent says no, then you either play as DA, using that codex and nothing else or as "green marines" using the SM codex and only their units (so no DA 'special units' or rules).

In a tournament environment, you will be expected to stick to units chosen from one codex (unless you play Daemon or Witch Hunters where you get to induct units from Guard or SM - but the SM must be from the SM codex, no BA/DA/SW/BT.).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

If you use only generic SM models and not DA specific models it's fine to use the SM codex instead of the DA codex. The rules don't say anything about paint job AFAIK.
You can never mix units or rules from the two codices though.

In one game turn an Imperial guardsman can move 6", kill a few guys with his flamer, assault 6", kill two more guys with his bayonet, flee 12", regroup when assaulted, react 6", kill one more guy with his bayonet and then flee another 12".
So in one game turn an Imperial guardsman can move 42" and kill more than 5 people. At the same time a Chimera at top speed on a road can move 18"...

Thanks for the responses, it'll make it a bit easier to put an army list together.

Some tournaments have rules about paint jobs though. While many are fairly forgiving, especially with allowing anybody to use the basic book to represent their divergent chapter some tournaments will insist that if your chapter is painted and bears the markings of any of the major chapters (that is the 4 with their own unique army list and smurfs) you are restricted to the army list that applies to your army. Be aware of the possibility. Of course if your dark angels are dark green with bone robes but no chapter marking or an alternate one, then they can simply be green marines made from ultramarine gene seed.

Interceptor Drones can disembark at any point during the Sun Shark's move (even though models cannot normally disembark from Zooming Flyers).

If you and I were playing Id say go ahead, they are all SM so use what you want. But if you were at a tourny they would burn you at the stake for trying that. That makes my whole argument on why cant chaos use new Imperial weapons, they were once SM too, even worse. Seeing as now not even REALL SM can use Imperial weapons lol
