It was Dawn of War orignally that pulled me out of Fantasy Warhammer, and threw me directly into the land of the 41st millennium. After getting all the expansions and having so many races to my disposal to have a truly epic and diverse battle every time I play ( Plus my beautiful Tau). Now I've been looking over Dawn of War 2, and to be honest i'm not very impressed. They released a game with four races, and not as many features as the original DoW. Aye, aye the graphics are improved and we do see a strong amount of customization within the commanders and sergeants, but is it worth giving up all the other races and gameplay from the original?

The first DoW only had 4 races to start, and no doubt expansion packs to DoW2 will have the other races. There are actually 5 races in DoW2 but only 4 are playable in any form.

Mhm, but would it be better to just wait till they come out with expansions? Is it worth $50?

I think DoW2 will start to really shine when the expansion packs and SDK come out. Pretty much the same as DoW1 - it was pretty lackluster when it first came out too, but really started to pick up steam with the addons.

You realize if too many people do that, there won't BE any expansions.

My opinion: No.

It's Dawn of War II: Company of Heroes.

I'm thoroughly disappointed with the work they invested into this sequel. While the cinematic are amazing, the models are damn cool, it does not make up for the loss of epic battles or the loss of gameplay.

I thought 40k was skirmish/squad based battles - Apoc, and previously Epic (lol) were more for epic battles.

I enjoy Dawn of War II a lot, it was definitely worth the $50. The campaign and multiplayer are both great, in different ways. The new army painter doesn't have custom icons, but it has shiny colors and half/quartered space marine schemes. If you liked DoW 1 you won't necessarily like DoW II, they are very different games.

On moon miranda.

The game seems to play much more like WC3/DoTA where DoW I played more like C&C/Starcraft.

There's a pretty big difference in the gameplay, I've been playing through DoWII, but so far I'm liking DoW I more. Regardless of the included races, the game just seems too small.

The SM's in the original DoW were badass angry killing machines (Cleanse, Purge, Kill!), they seem more "knight in shining armor trying to be badass" thing in DoWII. The game seems too...techy & bright for what it should be.

That said, it's still fun, you might as well give it a try.

The missions are relatively small. You don't get buildings to churn units out, so it's hard to imagine there being any epic battles. I played a few missions in to the the second planet, and the boss fights are very annoying. It feels like its a boss fight from a beat em up game like Streets of Rage, or Double Dragon. I do like the whole squad building thing, where you get experience for your characters and arm them with equipments. Although I find it odd, I get most of my Space Marine upgrades from orks and not from my chapter.

Here is the deal with Dawn of War. First, the multiplayer and campaign portions of game are very different. They are so different, that other than the unit appearance, they could be considered different games. Secondly, because of this difference, there are a whole bunch of people who are going to like aspects of this game that hate RTS games. On the flip side, there are a lot of RTS fans who are going to absolutely hate this game.

The Campaign, Game #1,

The campaign, to me, plays a lot like Fallout Tactics. You have 6 units, of which you can only use any 4 at one time, that build up in level as you play the game. You also obtain equipment through boss drops, mission rewards and random drops on the battlefield. The fact that you have some options and can tweak how the sqauds are equiped, means you can tailor the units to fit your personal play style. More ranged, more melee or a combination. You are provided with some intellegence about what your facing prior to the mission and can make some adjustments to your equipment and squads.

As mentioned above, there is only 1 playable race in the campaign and you can't save in mission. The missions are a bit repeative, but this doesn't bother me all that much because most games are repeative when it comes down to it. The save issue isn't that big a deal to me because the missions can be done fairly quickly if desired and don't take that long, even if your cleansing the whole map.

Multiplayer - Game #2

The multiplayer is a lot like Company of Heroes because you capture various control points to get certian resources. However, this does not mean that if you liked CoH, you'll like DoW2. The main difference is that there is no structure building what so ever in DoW2. No bunkers, no production buildings, nothing. Everything is built out of your "base" and upgrades from there. People who like base building and being able to lock down resources will be extremely annoyed.

The game becomes very cat and mouse in multiplayer due to the above and the fact that kills result in experiance for victorious squad. This means people will try to capture undefended nodes and run at the drop of hat if met with equal or superior forces. You end up with roving mobs of units running from node to node until someone gets caught at a disadvantage and can kill enough of the opponent to gain a superior edge. This disadvantage usually turns into who can micromanage the most as the units have lots of abilities that required a lot of touch time.

If you like base building, resource management and hate micromanagement, this multiplayer is most defiently not for you.

Yeah, seeming like something I'm not going to like. I like having large squad based/epic battles; not here is your troops GO!

I think it is worth it for the single player.

The multiplayer, not so much. It's not the micro that's the problem, it's the fact that the system discourages you from fighting where you don't have significant to overwhelming advantage- most of the game is extended disengagement which is pretty boring.

I think the 40k will MMO will accually be a flop,I mean with WOW to contened with espically with the new wrath of the lich king expansion pack. Also don't forget about the new starwars MMO thats comin out, depending on when it comes out it could rock the market or suck. But back on topic, yip DOW 2 is worth it!

Finished the game. As mentioned in other forums, the game gets repetitive late. I got all the terminator armor and then went to the final mission because none of the other "loot" for the missions was worth anything. The random loot leaves a bit to be desired because you can get hamstrung due to crap drops. I might play through again with some tweaks to how I specced.
