I haven't posted anything new in a while, so here is something I got photos of. This is an older space marine figure (2nd ed) that I had around, painted as a test for a color scheme.

A friend of mine calls these old marines "Huggy Marines" because they hug their weapons to their chests. It is so much better now that we can do at least a few poses for the unit.

Before I get any comments, this guy is done at my lower quality, the idea was to get a good quick and solid color scheme that I could use on a whole force.

You make that outdated model look solid, man. Nice paint job on it. Out of curiosity, how long did that take you?

Man, I wish there was a real Black Library where I could get a Black Library Card and take out Black Library Books without having to buy them. Of course, late fees would be your soul. But it would be worth it. - InquisitorMack

That was kinda my question - how long did it take and what approach do you take? Prime black/white, old inks/new washes.

- Blackbone

Us Blood axes have learnt a lot from da humies. How best ta kill 'em, fer example.

Primed in black.

The white is three tones, working up from a medium gray to a very pale desaturated blue/gray to pure white. The actual colors are:
Ironhull gray, the P3 equivalent to Codex grey)
Frostbite (also P3)
Morrow White (pure white, like Skull white)

The blue is Ultramarines blue worked up using a parchment color (either Menoth white base or Bleached Bone. They both mix with Ultramarines blue the same way, but the P3 color coats a little better).

Almost no inks. The only ink I used on him was a black wash over the metals.

As for how long this took me, it wasn't very long. I did not time it, but it might have been an hour to an hour and a half. Maybe less. Doing a whole force at this quality takes a lot less time per mini, but this guy was the test.

Not as badass as the beakies, but still still more badass than what they got now.

Yeah, this is very much post-beaky marines. This was a significant increase in detail from the original beakies, but at the same time, they made them WAY less posable. This marine would be repeated over and over again, and that would be your whole force.

Actually, I was going through my bitz box the other day and I realized that I had a couple very old Space Crusade marines. These are the very first huggy marines, and some of the earliest Mk7 armor that GW ever made (they don't look much like our current set of marines). I'm going to paint one of those up sometime soon to act as a stunt double in my movie marines force.

Nicely done. I always felt that these guys had their place in the 40k universe. Partially because I'ma cheap bastard, but also because Marines don't just fight, They march! They stand at attention! They run drills!

I could easily see a whole army of these guys marching across the battlefield. (although I think a "mix" looks better. Expecially if the veterans use the beaky models.)

Good job!

Veteran Beakies? I like that idea.

Yeah, these guys really look like they're marching, while the newer huggy marines really don't have that uniform stance (the Black Reach and Macrage minis all have their shoulders up... it makes them blend into a posed army better though).

This is an Eagle Warrior color scheme. There is a little extra red on him, like on the head (not my idea, but I think it looks great). You can't see it from this angle, but I did paint on an eagle warrior emblem on his shoulder. I think I put a couple other photos of him in my gallery (its in the 40k section) if you're interested.
