with the new SM codex can special chapters such as Black Templars and Dark Angels take new options/upgrades such as vanguard squads and relic blades. it seems only fair.

No. New items/units are not available outside Codex: Space Marines. Differences between items (eg Storm Shields) are also not carried across, unless your opponents are happy for you to do so. Fifth Edition: What You See May Not Be What You Get.

Unless it specificly directs you to the SM codex (i.e. "see C:SM for info")

Yes, it's unfair, but that's just GW's awkward "codex release policy"

It seems like SM gets updated every edition, and the rest just get picked at random.

See your nearest DE player for further info...

Yep, in Tournament land, DA are restricted to their own Codex (cower before Sicarius, Azrael!). However, FAQ suggests that a gentleman's agreement might be reached regarding some issues like transport capacity and additional wargear.

No.

Every chapter has to stick with its own codex.
So Black templars,Blood Angels and Dark Angels can't use any new option in codex space marines.
Chapters in C: SM get full access, plus space wolves may get some options/upgrades if the official SW-PDF at the GW-site points for reference to C: SM.

Yup...the one reason I completely stopped collecting DA, I was so annoyed with the monstrosity that was the new rules in the SM dex and how none of them applied to me.

Well at least Deathwing can mix and match who has what with what, are Fearless.. can be Troops..First turn Deep Strike..

No, there is no benifit to DA at all.

Lets not forget the boys in Chaos land didnt get updated Transport Capacities either for the same vehicles. Deamon and Witch Hunters got some rules like Machine Spirit, but no updated Transport Capacities either. I dont hear complaints from those ends.

This is just a tired whinefest over something that changed almost 4 months ago now. While ill admit for consistancy it is silly, it is simply the way it is. I wouldnt let it affect what army I played though. People play DA and BA because they are DA and BA.. not because they get all the coolest warger.

Ya sorry bout that, had a mental slip there. Just doesn't make since to me how an edition change plus 1 new dex sends an army like DA from close to top teir to the bottom except for 1 build. Also didn't help that the last thing i got was AoBR and then a friend dumped another 20 orks onto me...

I know, it's frustrating.
My Warboss could easily loot both a Relic blade and a 3++ Storm Shield. He kills wearers of those between meals.

Still, the stupid rules don't let Warbosses have neither...

In one game turn an Imperial guardsman can move 6", kill a few guys with his flamer, assault 6", kill two more guys with his bayonet, flee 12", regroup when assaulted, react 6", kill one more guy with his bayonet and then flee another 12".
So in one game turn an Imperial guardsman can move 42" and kill more than 5 people. At the same time a Chimera at top speed on a road can move 18"...

Yeah, I'll trade you for death company, terminators as troops and the emperor's champion. Oh, and I'd quite like a chaplain thats slightly meaner than a vet sergeant like the old codexes get too.

Different book, different rules. Get over it.

Yeah I really do not mind the changes because of the benefits I get such as DC and OCE on Baal preditors/rhinos. Its a nice thing. It's just the inconsistency is alittle frustrating.

Carrying the new rules over to DA and BA isn't too horrible. But, for BT, it'd be brutal. Two heavy weapons in the termie squads, six-man las/plas, and Assault Squads with Storm Shields. And Preferred Enemy for all!

Yeah, it doesn't quite feel right, but that's the way it is.

Actually its the Second oldest "current" codex out atm (Space Wolves being the Oldest on a technicality. The DE had a Second Edition Printing that added loads of stuff) so while an update is deserved, it is most certainly not wanted. Space Wolf Players like myself and all the DE players I know, are absolutely DREADING the new versions of our codex's, because we've had them for so freaking long we know what works and what doesn't, and we don't want a new codex to come along and break everything

Models, yeah. Rules, Notsomuch.

Though if the Rumours about Wulfen, Blood Claws, Special Characters and The Unique Land Raider are true, I might not mind it too much

Edit: I lol'd how you Specifically mentioned a Dark Eldar "Player" and not "Players"

It's the oldest current codex. A 'second edition' that barely added a single page worth of material that didn't even change the product code is not a 'new' codex.

Any Content added means it Was a New codex.

If I Have a Encyclopedia, then Republish it with an Extra Page, its a New Version of the Encyclopedia, and newer than a Different Encyclopedia that was published between the 2

I think that is the most egregious use of capitals I have ever seen on this board.

But does it really matter who has the oldest codex?

You are just reinforcing that old internet rule; "I cannot be arsed to help, but I'll correct anything, anytime, anywhere."

As an aside. A friend of mine used to log in using a different account and answer his own questions way wrong. He found that it always ensured several peoples participation.
