From a fluff perspective I have 2 questions:

1.How does it deal damage is it like a plasma gun that shoots something or what?

2.What is it's primary role, tank busting or for takin out enemy soldiers?

Busy somewhere, airin' out the skin jobs.

It's a "microwave" weapon.

basically speeding up the molecules until they react explosively...thats something along the lines of the fluff.

I dont suppose tanks OR troops would react that well depending on the level of heat applied.

I have never failed to seize on 4+ in my life!

I think I read something along the line of "super-heated air" in some book. Microwave weapon sounds pretty spot on though.
In Fire Warrior is was a constant beam of....stuff. (Yes, I know the game sucked)

To me, the concept behind it has always contradicted what an assault weapon was though. If it were some kind of microwave based gun, I'd think you'd need pin point accuracy to make it work properly. Definitely not the sort of thing you could achieve while running around on a battlefield and firing from the hip.

It projects a fuel that is heated by microwaves, hitting a target with a stream of superheated stuff that melts anything it comes in contact with. It is an assault weapon because its easy to aim with the constant fire spewing out.

A melta is pretty much a big maser used as an armor buster.

In old fluff it was super heated air, kind of like a blow torch, What ever it is its fire based since it says in the Eldar codex that it does not effect the avatar.

I think the reason meltas fail vs. Avatars is because you cannot melt someone who is already molten

I think Palaeomerus has it, it's a big fancy futuristic maser. Like a laser, but fires microwaves instead of light waves (or are they light particles? who knows.....)

Anyone ever play StarWars battlefront? in the rebel army was that bothian spy that could use that crazy heat gun thing. Im pretty sure its EXACTLY like that. Just a wave of SUN HOT air. That would deffinetly MELT stuff!

Meltas work by a two part ignition system forcing the pyrum-petrol gas into a sub molecular state of thermal agitation. Whatever thats supposed to mean.

Supposedly the weapon makes no noise but the beam passing though air causes a hissing sound. And then a blasting sound as whatever you hit is vapourised.

(From the 4th Ed 40K and Necromunda rulebooks)

In Fire Warrior is was a constant beam of....stuff. (Yes, I know the game sucked)

Actually most the weapons and the level design was pretty good in my opinon. Its just the absurd story of the Kais the Super Tau whos so cool he can shoot down armour 11 valkeries using only a str 3 autogun that let it down, that and how the adeptus mechanicus seemed to like nothing more than putting up force fields and hiding the keys all around the ship in comedy places...

So then, if its a microwave or ray, wouldn't it affect everything between the gun and its maximum range? I.e. if you fired it at a soldier, would it melt through him and continue to hit the tank behind? Or would it stop as soon as it hit anything? (looking for fluff argument either way)

This has always confused me. Microwave gun makes sense to me, but what does that make plasma weapons? DOW2 has them shoot blue balls of light, but I thought they shot literal plasma, which would probably be invisible.

Plasma guns heat a single molecule to plasma state and launches it by a cylindrcal magnetic field generated by the weapon.

Do you feel enlightened?

You forgot the 1d6 fire damage! Everyone is afraid of that (Funny story, had a Wall of (non-Magical)Fire blocking a path "Oh come on you big dumb level 14 fighter, its ONLY 1d6 damage per round!" says the mage )
