Hey man...have you ever been clawed by a new born kitten? It hurts!!!!!

Back on topic, when I played fantasy I loved my slaves. They are great meat shields!

So you started a topic to discuss between two options? Why didn't you just say "Which is better Skaven Slaves or Gnoblars?" or why not expand the topic to "What's the best unit for tarpitting?" then we could have a real discussion.

Skaven slaves ain't so bad fighters after all. I mean M5 is nice and they have almost standard human statline.

Not sure why people expect skaven slaves to be good in CC.
all they have to do is be speed bump / tarpits.

take a unit of 42 with spears and death frenzy them twice. Who cares if you lose d3 models a turn to exhaustion.. they're slaves! That's what they're there for! In exchange you get 42 attacks a turn! Even with WS 2 you'll still average a lot of hits and you'll still have combat resolution to stay stuck in. Talk about making your opponent blow a blood vessel. He goes in expecting the unit to be a push over and gets his elite unit ran off the table by beatened down, put upon, malnurished slaves!! MWUAHAHAHAHAHA!

Remember to tohat gnoblars have the massed firepower of their slings.

A unit of 20 charged by a large target can do an amazing amount of damage to said target, or more importantly its rider.

true. But unless I'm mistaken, they're only strength 2 meaning many large creatures aren't even effected by it and their riders are typically only wounded on 6's and that's after rolling to hit and randomizing between rider and mount.. it is useful in a pinch and any lack in effectiveness can always be made up by rolling a assload of dice..

Skaven slaves better complement their supported army. A move value that matches their main blocks (rather than lags behind) and the ability to overcome their weakness with ranks and general's leadership makes them better value in my opinion. You can see Ogre Kingdoms armies without gnoblars, but rarely see a Skaven army without slaves.

What about Hobgoblins? They don't come with anything, but they're WS3 and LD6, meaning they hang around for a little bit against light troops.

Don't forget that Skaven Slaves usually aren't Ld2

They get added Ld for their ranks and my regular Skaven opponent tends to keep them in range of his Warlord, those things add up!

That is also true. You can easily make them leadership 10. But that still doesn't matter though if you lose 8 of them from a charge

Oooo- Hobgoblins. Well played Polonius. I believe they're considered pretty mandatory in most CD armies....

Anything that manages 8 kills on a Slave unit deserves to break through it.

Also, savvy Skaven Generals that play horde style tend to work in a checkerboard formation. Killing those puny Slaves probably earns the victorious unit a full Clanrat unit in the Flank.

But one can come up with all kinds of situations in which any unit is beaten. What's really important is how units tend to perform on average. And on average, Skaven Slaves are a dead good unit for the points you pay for them.

Slaves, most definately. If they break, the rest of the army does not care. If you dont break, there will be a whole lot of ratling guns blazing at you. Slaves die? Who cares!
