I'm not speaking from tourney experience, but assault squads don't really set my world on fire, so to speak.

You need more melta love, as well.

I think you're trying to do too much. My advice would be to drop a few of the cheaper units like the Land Speeder and the Assault Squad and use the points to purchase transports for you Tac Squads. You may want to consider a different HQ choice as well.

Thanks for the replies. I like your line of thinking gojira. I'm not sure that I would want to get rid of the land speeder though as it seems to be an all-star in every game I play (I play mostly against other marines/nids/chaos).

Although... thinking of saccing the speeder, assault squad, chaplain and pred for 2 las razorbacks and a land raider redeemer and captain in termi armor. I havn't pointed it out yet, but does that sound like a more competitive direction?

OLD MAN ULTRAMARINES' BASEMENT

Couple of things.
1st-U need rhinos for all 3 of ur tacs
2nd- dreads are okay, but better spent in other locations
3rd-a single land speeder is crap
4th-an assault squad CAN'T have 5 lightning claws, that would be a vanguard squad.

so my advice to u, drop the dread, the land speeder and get more rhinos. also you need to have more melta love. so drop the missile launchers and get multi-meltas. Also, drop the assault cannon in the termie squad, and make it a cyclone missile launcher. Also, try to purchase a LRC/LRR for them. extra fire power, and they are rolling into battle in a caddy. take care!

My list above just list extra options, otherwise its just basic equipment. I bought the pair of lightning claws for the Sgt, as that is the only eligible model to use them. I think the point cost is accurate for that purpose listed.

Why does each tac squad NEED a rhino? I was thinking of doing 2 razorbacks and leave 2 CS back to cover objectives. (as my last post says)

Why is a single land speeder crap? Its probably been, in friendly games, the choice that has killed the most on a point per point ratio.

Sorry I'm new and I'm not entirely clear on the reasons.

rhinos for the manuverablilty. Razorbacks are nice, but in a Killpoint misison, you HAVE to combat squad them, which makes it easier for your opponet to beat you. Also, only one Landspeeder, which is 10/10/10, is easy to kill. nice manuveribility, but not perfect, especailly for a new player, no offense though. you need to just be able to get up close with the rhinos, to multi-melta the big tanks he has, then clean up the mess with bolter fire, and other types of HtH. your assault squad is nice, you just need to protect it, and a wall of rhinos will do that. hope this info helps.

rhinos are nice to run your men up the feld to were you want them. plus you can get them there safely and fast. Me my self its drop pods my army is all about it but thats my thing hit hard and fast. And dont let them know where im coming from.

Given that I'm a BA player, I must advise you to use the troops I only wish I had: sternguard and vanguard.

Drop one tatical plus the 5 man assault squad. Pick up Sternguards and rhinos for your troops. If you have the pts, make your chaplain a terminator chaplain and put him with the termies for extra CC goodness. (Vanilla marine chaplains allow rerolls to hit on the charge right?)

Keep the missile launchers on the tacticals; multimeltas suck on infantry. That has not changed since 3rd. If you want more multimeltas, change the landspeeder so it has one. Also, you can loose extra armor. Extra armor is best on assault transports, and you don't have any.

first you will want rhinos for all your tac squads. It protects them and makes them more mobile. If you want an assault squad make it a 10-man and take a thunder hammer over the LC. This lets them survive a bit longer AND they can now fight a tank. If you want terminators you WILL want to give them a land raider of some type so they can survive to get close and shoot or assault.

LR is a huge investment at 1500. That's why I rarely use termies below 1850 myself. Without a LR, too many anti-marine weapons happen to smoke them as well, and they have a poor wound/point ratio.

I can't stress sternguard enough.

You do not HAVE to combat squad your marines to take a Razorback. You just won't be able to use its transport ability. It can still act as a screen for your squads and will be able to support them with its weapons.

I have always felt it better, esp in lower point games, to give your marine something they can hide in. The rhino lets them do that, plus it lets them move across the board faster. You do lose the fire support of a razorback, but I think the flexability the rhino gives the majority of the time trumps it.

Or something like that. Basically you want everything in transports nowadays for protection and mobility, and meltas for reliable tank busting. The preds are there to give you ranged support. You can also go with 2 Tacs and fit another Dread and a Pred for even more firepower if you want.

Extra armour is a nono unless on a Land Raider and it's kinda debatable. Assault squads are not awesome, and the Lasx3 Pred is way too expensive... If you want Las on it, just take Las Sponsons.

and try to get a bit more firepower
ditch the speeder and get transports

hmmm, lots could be said to this, but i agree, get a big assult squad there bloody handy!

but if the points are needed for other things then im sure you could scrap them.

my army contains about 3 of them atm... but there troops for me (BA ftw!!)

If you are taking an asault squad a few things:
1 if its not 10 man make it 10 man some how
2 take 2 flamers. If you want plasma DO NOT put it on your sargent.
3 Take either a powerfist or a thunder hammer. I prefer the TH so they can hurt vehicles.

Three troop units are sufficient. I'd replace one Tactical with a Scout unit (sniper rifle x5, missile launcher).
