I am thinking about trying my hand at sculpting. I've done some conversions on my guardsmen and filled some gaps, but haven't actually tried to sculpt a full or partial model. I know that I should start with a wire skeleton, but what tips do you have regarding building up and filling out the mini.
I'm going to use GW green stuff, and I know to use lots of water on my tools. I'm not sure about some of the finer points like how long the putty should set before you tried to work it, or how much between layers of putty.
Thanks for all your help , if I get started soon I will post a progress report.

Well i usually just start to work right after i mix it and create the general shape. Let it cure a bit before you start smoothing and always work in layers.

I have to second the rubber tipped sculpting tools. They are a key to getting a smooth finish on a model. Ive only recently discovered them though so as for any tips with them I am at a loss.

Right there's your first problem. You're gonna pay $10 for about 10 inches of that stuff from G-Dubbs when you could get a full 3 feet from here for only $17.
Also, just for the record, it's not " GW green stuff". GW just licensed the packaging from Kneadatite.

Lubrication.
keep you tools lubricated at all times with a water based lubricant, stops everything stickingg together.
Oil based one can leave residue which can be a sod to remove!
