New to the forums but I've been lurking for awhile and just joined. I took up Word Bearers recently and I've been working on a 1500 point list. I wanted it to be fluffy, so more man than machine, daemons, and daemons machines. So, here's my list, tell me what you guys think. Suggestions are welcome and GREATLY appreciated. I don't want to win so much as have fun, but flexibility and maybe some power are two important things. The sorcerer is also arguably the Dark Apostle, and I am working on a conversion for him using a few different sets and bits from donations (friends). In the fluff, sorcery is frowned upon by Dark Apostles but seeing as they summon daemons and use what some would call 'sorcery' I saw it fit to make the DA a sorcerer.

Total = Exactly 1500

130 Chaos Sorcerer: Terminator Armor, Force Weapon, TL Bolter, Doombolt, Personal Icon.

180 Chaos Terminators: 1 Champion - Chainfist, Heavy Flamer; 3 Terminators - Reaper Autocannon, Combi-Weapon

100 Chaos Dreadnought: Multi-Melta, Close Combat Arm, TL Bolter.

245 Chaos Marines: 1 Aspiring Champion - Power Weapon, Plasma Pistol; 11 Marines - 1 Meltagun, Icon of Chaos Glory

245 Chaos Marines: 1 Aspiring Champion - Power Weapon, Plasma Pistol; 11 Marines - 1 Meltagun, Icon of Chaos Glory

220 Chaos Havocs: 5 Havocs - 2 Lascannons, 2 Missile Launchers, Icon of Chaos Glory, Chaos Rhino Transport

150 Chaos Defiler (No upgrades just cut and paste regular)

100 Greater Daemon

130 10 Lesser Daemons

"From the fires of Betrayal unto the blood of revenge we bring the name of Lorgar, the Bearer of the Word, the favored Son of Chaos, all praise be given to him. From those that would not heed we offer praise to those who do, that they might turn their gaze our way and gift us with the Boon of Pain, to turn the Galaxy red with the blood, and feed the hunger of the Gods."

Welcome to dakka.

Trying to make a decent word bearers list with the new codex is a brave thing to do, but if fun its youre after then its not too hard.

The most glaring issue with the list is that big squad of possessed. They soak up such a huge amount of your points and in all honesty arent that good. Their random powers make them virtually unusable tactically. Dropping them would be a step in the right direction. Replace them with more CSM and demons, terminators or a couple more defilers.

In both your CSM squads you NEED 2 special weapons and an IoCG, with the icon taking precedence. Its too easy to break a squad of CSM without an icon. Once you have that covered then both the squads need to have 2 meltas each, because you are quite low on anti-tank.

The dread and the defiler, being your only two vehicles of any substance, will eat all the AT fire on your first turn and die. You either need to get more of them or take them out and add some terminators.

If you re-arrange your list and find you have an extra 100pts to spare think about getting a greater demon that can take advantage of your cheap champions.

Word Bearers are the legion that took the biggest hit when the latest codex came out. Thier bread and butter units (CSM and Demons) became much worse and nothing substantial was offered up to replace them. Currently it is almost impossible to build an effective, yet fluffy, word bearers list. As you as you understand this then you probably will keep having fun.

If we were to play each other in a tournament, not only would I table you, I would murder you, your family, every woman you ever loved and burn down your house. I mean, what's the point in winning if you allow people that don't take the game seriously to live?

Editted my list to fit some of what you said. I don't like the idea of losing more bolter shots by adding a second meltagun because I want to be able to deal with horde armies like orks and nids from a 24" distance. Greater Daemon was a great idea and a squad of terminators to support my Sorcerer Lord is probably the best way to go.

If you want more bolter shots then get rid of the plasma pistols on your CSM champions. They really arent worth the points and you risk killing one of your valuble sacrifices. The meltas are essential because you dont have sufficent anti-tank. One squad of havocs and a dread isnt enough. Melta Guns will also help you to kill MCs and can one-shot Nob Bikers
