I have recently made the foolish decision to put names on all the bases of my Guardsmen (crazy, I know). I have never written more then two names on bases before, and this is obviously a large task for my active gaming army with 108 infantry models. I would like to give them all themed individual names (after my favorite TV shows, movies, ect...), it is going to be an on going project, obviously. So I know my skill will increase as I paint. Not wanting to leave some models looking junky and need their name repainted, I was wondering if anyone has any pointers for a left handed painter (yes, this does matter). Some type of do-hicky (rare or otherwise, I am tremendously resourceful) that might help, or some way to practice during my "boredom time" during meetings or lectures.

Just because anyone agrees with anyone, doesn't mean they are correct. Beware the thin line between what is "Correct" and what is "Popular."

The doo hicky is called a paint pen. Those are MAGIC! And make sure you take plenty of breaks every now and then. Carpel tunnel can be a bitch

That's not the issue I'm talking about. It is difficult to hold the model and base while applying the name to the base and keeping neat and consistant. I'm looking for possibly some sort of name applying device that isn't my hand and a brush/pen, or exercises that will help me develop the muscle memory for painting onto the odd surface.

ahhh. Have you tried a small vice to hold the mini for you? Ive even seen a weird magnifying glass that has two little clamp arms to hold things. Anything like that?

Best thing I can Suggest is a Stencil and a very sharp knife

Btw, if you are ever stuck for names, check out the Everchanging Book of Names. Its a great app. I used it myself to name all my Space Wolves

@ Cracker : Nah, never had luck with vices, I need to connect my body with the model. Don't really know anybody who paints models well that doesn't hold the model somehow.

@ Waagh : 108 individual stencils? Holy crap! But that does make me think about finding a tiny stencil machine... As for the names, thanks, but I'm shooting for themes, as I said. Like movies, TV shows, and what not. I can make up my own names, but that would just end up being boring and silly.

I have also thought about water transfers. Then I could even use decorative fonts and other things easily. Though that would be very delicate.

Label Printer perhaps?

I saw one used well for BFG ship names on bases.

Lettraset could have something you need.

Also possible to print names out on to paper on your printer. (Duh)
Find a decent font and skew it to fit the curve of the base.
Cut, glue wash lightly to dull the white then clear varnish.
I've seen this look good before.
