Unless you are crazy about skirmish-style online games and have no hate for Steam or WindowsLive, it's a 3 hour game.

The important thing to know is that DoW2 is absolutely NOTHING like DoW1-Soulstorm. The graphic set is improved and the models are identical but whereas DoW let you manage base building and hundreds of men ala Age of Empires or Starcraft, DoW2 is a skirmish game set with pre-set forces and armies that max out at roughly 30 "models".

Play a demo before you commit to buying the game.

good game that has a good plot line. campaign is only playable as space marines tho. if you rush through the campaign you can finish it in about 3 hrs but if you play all the missions its more than 24 hrs of slaughter in the Emperor's name. maps look great too

So basically your saying they only call it DOW2 because the name will sell? that sucks.
I loved DOW simply because of the whole "hey Ive got 100 boyz heading for your base, I hope your ready!" aspect

DoW2 is basically not Dawn of War as we know it, but Company of Heroes warhammer edition.

So basically it should have been named Chapter of Heroes.

If you liked Company of Heroes, and like W40k, you're gonna like DoW2. It's a good game, just isn't the typical RTS (where economy and base building is the priority).

Empire: Total War and all the Total War games in general are Turn and RTS hybrid strategy games in that you got to build and expand an empire and accoplish certain goals to win the game.

First you got the turn component that is sort of like Civilization. You got a campaign map divided in regions. Each region has a city (from Rome Total War and on) that you must capture to control the region. Each region supports your empire by giving you tax income and building buildings and units (depends on what buildings the city has). The units are combined into armies. The long campaign final objective is usually controlling 50 regions and X region (Rome for example). There're also scenarios.

Then you got the RTS component in that battles set in the campaign map can be fought by you in real time. You get only the units that you brought with you, you set up in a defined area of HUGE terrain depending if you're attacking, defending, surprise attacked, etc. Then you fight like traditional RTS, but formations, morale, stamina and terrain are very important. So is where you're attacking (flanks are very vulnerable). Battles are as big as you want because in the options you set how many "dudes" per unit everyone gets. With 16+ units per side duking it out and units being 50+ "dudes", you get numbers in the thousands (so you need a lot of ram).

Anyway, it's a great game, has good replayability, although the previous games suffered from repetitiveness in that you were ALWAYS sieging or defending a city, and it gets tedious after a while, especially when you gotta destroy multi walled castles and the siege units are unresponsive. Medieval 2 also suffered from poor AI, as in, enemy stands there taking arrows till you run out. I expect good things from Empire tho.

the game is worth it ive played the game its great multiplayer isnt really as fun as Dow because of the pop cap is 100 and 3 space marines are 15pop so it isnt Huge Massive battles of 41st mellienium its small strategic games of the 41st Mellienium.

But Campagin is so Totally Worth it the story line is the best.

So far, I'm not that impressed. My preferred style of play is the individual games, as opposed to the campaign.

To me, there are far too few maps. DoW 1 came with many more maps, for 2,4,6 or 8 players. Dow2 has 6 maps, and the only variants are 1-on-1 or 3-on-3 (that I have found so far). No every-man-for-himself on bigger maps.

Additionally, the games seem to involve way too much micro-management in combat, and also have too many things going on that need you to touch them. Since you cannot build defenses on strategic points, you end up with this game of cat&mouse, where you need to defend your points or have the opponent just take them away when your guys are off doing something else. And the maps are all very open, so there are few places where you can say 'my guys will make a stand here and defend what's behind them'. It seems like no matter where you put your guys, your opponent can get behind you and take your points away with very little effort.

I dunno, maybe I'm just not getting it yet, but I much prefer DoW to DoW2. It made more sense from a strategic point of view. You could look at a map and know where the relevant terrain pieces to base your defenses around were. And, if you did it right, you didn't have to worry about losing everything you'd already captured to lone guys.

I didn't like the DoW2 campaign much. You just grind your way through mooks by luring one squad at a time into your ambush positions, meanwhile the rest of the enemy units just sit there looking stupid. Then you get to the big boss fights, where some bosses have hundreds of thousands of hit points. You just sit there grinding away, pounding on the enemy boss with thousands of rounds of ammo. It's ridiculous.

It is more fun on co-op, but that's gets a little dull after a while.

I am getting a lot of fun out of multiplayer though. It's a much smaller game than most RTS. This works well, because it means the winner of a fight is rarely the guy that got the most production and tech tree levelling completed, but is the guy that used cover and suppression best, or the guy that used the right units in the right places to effectively counter the other guy's cover and suppression. I lose against my mates, I lose all the time like I lose at all kinds of RTS. But in Starcraft or some other RTS, I generally lost because I haven't spent days mastering tech trees and base building. In DoW2 I lose because my mates do really clever things to outmanouver my defensive positions, or guide my assault forces into a trap. It really does reward clever tactical play.

The only issue is that there are few maps at this point (I think seven?) and the tech tree stops rather suddenly. The biggest unit for the marines is the predator, for tyranids its the carnifex. It feels like there's a lot more game that needs to be released in an expansion.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
