Hiding in a dark alley with a sharp knife!

In a moment of madness I've decided that my next 40k army is going to be yet another RT style Chaos Renegade force. This one will be entirely Khorne flavored and built around a core of "Khorne Beserkers". To this end I'm collecting a force of Khorne marked RT renegades and the '92 World Eater figures (I'm working to procure a Bloodslaughterer as a "counts as dreadnaught" too) But I'm torn as to how to paint them.

Should I paint them in the varied, non-uniform style of Chaos marines in the early days as depicted in the "Slaves to Darkness" book? I took this stylistic aproach when painting my Slannesh Marines and I think they look great. Or should I use the more modern paint scheme as presented in the " 'Eavy Metal" photos of the '92 World Eaters?

Included are scans of the two styles I am refering to.

I've narrowed it down to these two choices. What do you think? Explain your answer.

Thanks
TR

As an owner of many of these fine models you have pictured here and the infamous blood slaughterer, I can say that you will more likely be satisfied with the models from the '92 'eavy metal. They are closer to the current plastic Khorne bezerkers, and will fit in just fine. As I understand, all the chaos models from the early 90s were test models for a new chaos range (and if you look at the tzeentch models that they make now, they're pretty close, just 10+ years late). My personal paint scheme is very close to the older slave to darkness mini on the right in the middle photo. The one with the blue greve and the bloodletter head. Note that the blue is a left over piece of armour from the original legion's colors, blue and white. In the fluff, it is said that the World Eaters all leave one piee of armour in the original colors. They even made a Khorne renagade from the old slaves to darkness line that had a heavy weapon.

I always liked predominantly black or brass Berzerkers rather than red ones. I'd go with the RT style scheme.

Bloodslaughterer as a 'counts as' Dreadnaught seem right to me as the Chaos Dreadnought always felt a little too Nurgley to me.

I saw a scratch-build Blood Slaughterer that took the basic concept of the old model, but updated it and ended up really great.

Why did the berzerker cross the road?

Yup.
Vut that's no suprise at all, really. If you look at the World Eater list from that book it includes things that would seem out of place in a Khorne army todays such as "devestator squads" and "medics".

Yeah and it's a fun little model, if a bit small by today's standards for a dred. I might catch the same sort of grief from some sectors of this forum as I did with the "tinboys counts as killa kans" thing.

I actually had an opponent make fun of my RT imperial dreadnought that I'd converted up to be a chaos dread. Of course I think it's about the same size as a modern terminator (I've got the model with short legs).

Hmm... it is a LOT smaller though. I'd be happy for you to use it as a termie or a possessed though.

Have you thought about maybe doing a pre heresy colour scheme maybe ?

That'd really freak people out as that colour scheme for them is AFAIK comparatively recent which would work well with the old models.

Oh, and according to the "Tales of the Heresy" book the legion were known as the "War Dogs", before they took their new name after Angron joined them.

Paint scheme-would utilize the second strip as primary colors (black and brass). That sets them apart from your current blood red berserker line. Note:

*Unless you have juggernauts already, you might cogitate using the current bloodcrusher models with the troops as counts as bikers. The new line is quite choice actually.

*Have you given thought to heresy or near post heresy force? The paint scheme is choice.

The blue and white looks great on the new berzerkers models as well. I have painted up a squad in those colors and am always amazed at how cool and different those "loyalist" color combinations look on chaos models.

My old marine chapter had white with one shoulder patch blue (specials, sergeants, and ICs had both blue). Its really quite nice, and I daresay different as most people don't paint their marines white.

It is of comparable size to the RT Dreadnought though. Another option would be to use it as an Obliterator althought it may be a little large for that.

But the biggest issue with that is I only have the one and they are a bit hard to find. Thus I have to find a proxy subject that a single model will work for. A chaos dred with two close combat weapons is the best fit.
Honestly, it's not that big an issue. I use RT dreds and Imperial robots all the time and no one complains.

I can't remember how large it is, but the blood slaughterer might make a good lord on a bike, or bike squad champion? He looks all close combatty, maybe a daemon prince of khorne w/ wings. the lil juggernauts would totally make great bikers, or terminators, they're small enough to fit on a 40mm base too. I use a rougue trader bloodthirster as a khorne daemon prince in my daemon army, and he's pretty much perfectly sized.

I don't even KNOW anymore.

Well, you already got my opinion yesterday - I dig the predominately red scheme (which is how I've painted those very figures in my own collection). Of course, I'd tone down the orangey-ness of the '90s GW paint scheme, and not use green. Yes, green makes sense from an artistic POV, but it looks way out of place on Berserkers. Use bone colors as accents, as I don't feel that the "Skulls for the Skull Throne" bit gets enough love these days.

Pre-Heresy color schemes are interesting, but I like it better when those colors are used on random bits of armor, like the 1st edition CSM in the second picture, on the far right.

No matter what colors you choose you will probably want a consistent scheme throughout the army. Back in those days I painted my renegades individually and they looked like a bunch of individuals running around rather than units or an army.

Here, take a look at these. The First 2 photos are my own world eater paint scheme. I purchased the renegades in the 3rd picture just because i wanted the models, but they were painted so nicely i couldn't bring myself to strip and re-paint them.

Is it just me, or do the old renegades look like they have just stepped out of Warhammer:Fantacy?
Sure it looks like as soon as they decided to pop into 40k for tea, they were given back packs and bolt pistols, but surely you would of thought GW would of put a tiny bit more effort into modeling them.

A lot of the Old Champions of Chaos could be used in either WHFB or 40K. The Slaves to Darkness and Lost and the Damkned books had ruloes for both games as well. That's why they look so "Fantasy-esque".

I abhor those old models. Sorry I just hate them.
As for the painting, I think adding some washes and highlights will make them look a lot better.
