Has anyone played this yet? Imagine Super Mario Brothers with the ability to control time. Some objects in the world are not affected by time, so you have to rewind after things happen, and do other time-altering stuff to solve puzzles!

It is really cool, but hurts my brain A LOT. It is also astoundingly hard.

Mmmmmm......let me help you on a few things:
1. You have used mario as an example, this is a No-No, nitendo = disgrace to real gamers and steals resources and shelf space of real games
2. Mario WAS popular, died a while ago
3. Sounds like a copy-and-paste job plus face lift

Sorry but sounds like a game to avoid like the plague

Wow that was poorly thought out argument.

When mentioning Mario I believe that Mattlov was referencing that it is a 2D platformer. Braid was very well reviewed and is a very thoughtful and innovative game, but much like Ico or Shadow of the Colossus is not really meant for mass consumption.

If the Mario games are so terrible then why did the last one sell millions of copies and still have a score of 97 on metacritic? This isn't even adding in the sells of Mario Kart or the DS games either.

If you don't even understand something as basic as Mario being popular then it is hard to take anything else you say seriously. Your post points to the obvious fact that you have no idea what Braid is so cannot have anything meaningful to say about it. You don't know what it looks like, how it plays, or any other important factor. Are there any other games you know nothing about in the slightest that you would like to comment on?

lol, don't worry about him, he just hates the Wii, and the DS, and anything and everything with 'nintendo' preceding it. Mario was good (as a 2-d platformer), but now it's a game that seriously needs to die. What is it, about two-hundred games for one franchise? Irrational arguments involving nintendo usually stem from a hate of the sacrilege to serious gamers, the Wii.

Braid was one of the best games to come out last year and certainly in the top 3 best XBLA games to come out last year.

It's a very challenging game but also very worthwhile. I wouldn't call it "astoundingly hard" I was able to beat it (all puzzle pieces) without looking a thing up and i'm not the brightest guy when it comes to logic type puzzles.

Anyway, i've owned Braid since the day it came out. The price is a little steep (1200MS Points/$15.00 USD) but I can assure anyone that it is worth it.

The gameplay is so unique, and solving those puzzles is quite fun. It has some pretty decent platforming elements as well.

Graphically the game is beautiful and the music that was picked for the game fits with it really well.

This is a game you definitely shouldn't pass up.

I really love how World 4, 5, and 6 also give you additional factors to deal with in your time rewinding such as your Shadow in world 5, the ring in world 6, and I love how you control the flow of time by walking in world 4 (but you can still rewind time too!)

Thats good, creative stuff.

Speaking of irrational arguments...

Mario was great in 3D. Mario 64 is fantastic, and even Mario Sunshine is decent. Did you play Mario Galaxy? Great game there. As long as the core Super Mario game (the ones involving platforming) are great then I see no reason for Nintendo to stop putting them out. Sure, Nintendo could stop throwing Mario in to every other title but again, I see no reason for them to stop making true Mario games featuring platforming.

Mario's a cult game that still appeals to a wide audience, for nostalgia as much as good, innocent fun. I enjoy gore as much as the next gamer, but I've found the games to great fun throughout my life, especially since Mario 64. If you and your mates are of that opinion that's fine - I'm a bit that way with Halo - but I wouldn't go so far as to damn a company for making a game that's similar to another one, or say that it steals resources or shelf space.

Why don't you name a game that you like, and we'll all think of similar games that were rubbish?

Super Mario is in no way, shape, or form simply a "cult" game.

Super Mario is about as blockbuster of a franchise you can get. Perhaps it's not as huge as it used to be, but when Nintendo puts out a new Mario platformer then that title tends to just print money for Nintendo.

You mean the Wii isn't the devil?

In my eyes atleast its the next best thing, forget global warming or nuclear holocaust, this is the biggest threat to humanity so far. [i know im a "little" biased]

Ok, forgive me for my sudden and uncoordinated attacks, but i truely feel that since gamecube, DS, DSi and Wii, Nintendo has started to kill real gaming. I can understand the like for mario but why is he still around? Look at what happened with sega and sonic the hedgehog, they have flogged him for everything he was worth and they went belly up and had to sell out.

Arnt you just sick of looking in EB or GAME or a store like it and seeing what seems to be a million mario games and posters for one console?

Look at Sony or X-box, yes they have flagships like Halo, Final Fantasy, Killzone, Fable but they have a whole range of others, and more than just three genres.

look at the lineup for the wii. i'm not talking about first party, i'm talking third party!

maybe its just me but they have abandoned all hardcore mature games. Madworld, No More Heroes, The Conduit, and what else!?

The online is horrible and the hardware is generations behind the PS3 and 360.

Sure it gets the casual audience in, but does nintendo have lose all the hardcore for this!? HAVE YOU SEEN EXCITEBOTS....it looks so pathetic.... CARNIVAL GAMES?

Until i see something worth on the wii like Metroid Prime 3 and a A BETTER ZELDA GAME like OOT, and those are first party, which leads me back to

my first point, not many good 3rd party hardcore games. and when 3rd party developpers make games, they don't even try hard. PS2 games destroy the wii's in expirence

I can see why Sheep hate me right now, but from my expirence, it was hell. which i why i have a ps3 now, which was the best gaming decision in my life, though an 360 would also been a good choice.

Curse you wii. you made me suffer

In what way is repeating the same formula over and over again a good thing? Franchises are good, but when they're no longer making changes to it (or continuing a storyline) they should just GO AWAY. Seriously, they made the original side-scrolling Mario's, the super mario, the mario kart, et cetera, and they just keep pedelling remakes and 'new' games with slight variations or gameplay tweaks.

But since Braid isn't a Mario game (I was just making the side-scrolling platformer reference) let's keep talking about it instead.

I loved how the puzzles actually made you think outside the box but there were some I could just not figure out forever. The only way I even got through the game was to put it aside for a few weeks and try again later.

Even more confusing than the puzzles was the story. Easily one of the most in depth ones around. Granted, I wish that the in the interview with the creator of Braid, he shed some light on what the story meant rather then basically saying "I'm much smarter than you, so I shouldn't waste my time explaining things".

I absolutely loved the final level, where you're racing concurrently with the princess. The whole thing was just so fantastical, I loved it.

(That's right, fantastical. As in, "fantasy-like").

If you can't see the progression and development in gameplay from Super Mario Bros, to Super Mario 3/Super Mario World, to Super Mario 64/Super Mario Sunshine, and finally to Super Mario Galaxy then I just don't know what to tell you. T

Other games with "Mario" tacked on to it aren't Super Mario games despite what you might think. I agree that Nintendo needs to stop whoring out their characters, but hey it sells games and every 4-5 years we get a new Super Mario platformer which is generally always a good time. Sunshine was probably the weakest of the latest Mario releases, but it was still a great time nonetheless.

Divadwm wrote:I loved how the puzzles actually made you think outside the box but there were some I could just not figure out forever. The only way I even got through the game was to put it aside for a few weeks and try again later.

The story is pretentious.

In my opinion it's the weakest part of the game. It's purposefully cryptic which to an extent annoys me. Mostly my problem stems from the fact that the gameplay is completely divorced from the story. It isn't until the final part of the final world that you actually do something in game that has to do with the story. Everything works well while you're playing the game, except the story - it's like an afterthought, not something that really develops as you play the game. You don't uncover new insights while playing a stage, and the puzzles are so abstract in nature that they necessarily have no relation to the story. I mean sure there are some general themes running through the worlds that have to deal with the story (the ring, your shadow, etc) but...again they're after thoughts and once you get in to the game you quickly forget about them as anything other than elements to a puzzle.

I also don't think the satire on the traditional 2D platformer (Mario) doesn't works with the story as it is presented. It's like he is using the Mario story as a metaphor yet the story is again wrapped in another layer of metaphor. It just seems like he was trying to damn hard to create this wonderful literary story and as I said before I just don't think it works within the context of this video game. It's not that gamers can't understand more complex stories, it's just that I don't think the way it's presented works.

Everything about Braid is wonderful except the purposefully divorced from gameplay, cryptic story.
