*Setup: A unit of flamer troops drops in. The Unit is in range and tries to flame an opposing squad. Three of the four flamers can reach the squad without issue. The fourth can as well, but the flame template would cross a friendly model in the same flamer unit. There is no CC blocking or in any way in issue.

*History: There was a time when you could use that fourth flamer and just count any friendlies underneath as potentially being hit.

*Question: Under V5 rules, can you use that fourth flamer, counting the potential hits against the friendly model (separately)?

where might effect: dropping troops, troops shooting a flamer out of the hatch of a vehicle and potentially hitting the vehicle itself (inversely the vehicle itself firing and tracing a line over itself-hey guard can be crazy like that).

Page 29 BRB: "place the so the narrow end is touching the model firing the weapon, and the rest of the template covers as many models as possible in the target unit without touching any friendly models

further down the page Multiple Template Weapons: "If a unit is firing more than one template weapon, resolve each shot, one at a time, as described above."

So as long as you are holding the template at an angle so that it is above all your own models, you are okay. Above isn't the same as "touching".

But then you can't actually fire it, so you're not hitting any of the enemy models either.

In short, no you cannot place the template to cover a guy in your own unit. Your trooper doesn't want to set fire to his best drinking buddy...

With vehicles its generally considered an exception since thats the only way to use the weapon, see similar threads...
