Subject: What new guard tanks do you favor? And how would you use them

Two flavors
Standard:
Battle Cannon (its like a hersy bar, boring, but a classic, and tough to beat)
heavy 20 str 5 canon (interesting pick, if the gun'r range was 36 instead of 24 than it would be a contender in my book)
twin linked auto cannon (Unless it has some strange rule that makes it better against skimmers, or ultra cheap I dont think I would take this tank)
Vanquisher canon (the queen of the battlefield. ultimate in utility, now if GW can keep it from being crazy expensive)
Demolisher pattern:
Demolisher Cannon (A nice solid pick just as good as always. It is hard to argue with str 10 ap2 large blast)
Nova Cannon (garbage, str 6 ap4 on a russ chassie? What a waste even if it ignores cover)
Plasma Blast cannon (Now we have a contender more range than a demolisher, able to fire the plasma sponsons as well as the main gun, I would put this as good as if not better than the demolisher depending on the rules for shooting this beast and the total cost)
Assuming points costs are the same as current Russ, and demolisher, and that all tanks of each class are the same price, what tank do you favor?

Yeah I'm going back and forth on the punisher cannon.
20 str 5 shots plus 9 HB shots is an awful lot of firepower.
at meqs that means 3 dead marines.
still it would spank any horde army.

The punisher seems reduntant.. you are already able to take alot of medium fire power if the rumours of 0-2 HW teams/ platoon is true. I would proberly go for battle cannon and hull mounted HB (unless sponsons become free or cheaper than air..) the executioner would be cool if you can get plasma cannon sponsons and if it stays below 200 points... Why do you consider the vanquisher the queen of the battlefield? a str 8 ap 2 shot (no blast) is hardly royal imo.
Oh and the exterminator is roumered to have 2 of those twin linked 4 shot autocannons, making it equivalent of 6 standard autocannons at bs 3. But if the price of the exterminator equals the other russes it will most likely be a waste of a HS slot.

I like to run a standard Russ, a Demolisher, and a Basilisk. The new codex means I'll probably return to a standard Russ, a Demolisher, and a Griffon. Given that I tend towards mechanized lists, I've got enough mid-range firepower already; I don't need to spend a heavy slot to get more of it.

If the rumors about moving 6" and being able to fire everything turn out to be true then a Demolisher with 2 multi-meltas. That turns out to be very good (if slightly short ranged) anti-tank.

That fire everything may not include ordnance though, and you would have to get your demolisher <12" of the target for meltas to be good. I thing a big part of IG is stopping the Land Raider before it unloads in your lines, the infantry cant do that.
The deciding factor for me will be if the vanquisher can shoot normal shells still, or has a better BS. If they get that probably 2 of those and either a Demolisher or Executioner. If vanquishers arent worth it 2x Demolisher and either Executioner or one of the artillery.
While not tanks I may be taking some of the sentinels too. Not sure if the scout ones can get Multimeltas or the Heavy ones can deep strike but either could be nice for AT.
I might get a couple hellhound or flamer sentinels depending on rules/costs.

As far as I know, the move and fire rule will NOT allow for others weapons to fire on the same turn as ordinance. Thats more of a rumor discussion. I Don't like like the idea of Main guns without Templates, even if it is 20 shots.

I agree with the plasma, but I can't help wanting 3 punishers. I just want to have them all fire at the same time at the same target to feel how it is to roll 60 dice.
But in terms of realism, the 5 plasma cannon shots are what I'm going for.
If you look at the other options I also think that 3 deathstrikes would be fun to have...if you're good with rolls. S10 AP1 and a blast radius of up to 6 inches... even if you scatter you hit your original target. Oh, and an infinite range!
I would also like that Banewolf, template poison wounds on a 2+ AND is AP3.

str8 + 2d6 armor penetration. Think of it as a melta gun that has one heck of a range, but only ap2. It is the best guard anti-tank gun past 24 inches.

So if its like a melta, it gets extra strength if its at half range?
Your better off looking at the one melta blast cannon, I don't know what its on (I think the Devildog hellhound variant) but a blast melta sounds good to me.

Hmmm...sounds like fun on a bun.
I would rather stick with blast weapons on my tanks though, they help me in a pinch.
My Leman Russ alone has wiped out many 5 man tactical marine squads with 1 shot(I'm ace with scatter rolls) and 11 ork boys in a mob of 30 in one shot. My basilisk has taken out 7 nobs in a squad of 11 in one shot as well.

Well that is the nice thing about the vanquisher, in the past, and in IA, the vanquisher could choose to shoot the AP shells, or standard battle canon shells

im not sure the LR destroyer is being given enough credit. against nids and specifically orks due to their poor saves, its giant fuk-off gun with20 S5 shots isnt too shabby. however my #1 pick prolly is the vanquisher. now i dont have to buy the anti-tank rounds for 20 pts from imperial armor and have to argue about the legality of imperial armor rules/upgrades.

I agree about the punisher, it has the potential to knock of a terminator squad as well, 20 shots is going to kill SOMEthing unless you are incredibly terrible at rolling and your opponent never misses a save.
Haven't heard anything new about the 3 standards in 1 choice, I have heard that if this is true, they may raise the pts cost if this is true.

The leman russ with the nova cannon is a great choice as i do believe that the nova cannon doesn't count as ordinance. This mean you can fire it as well as everything else. It uses the large blast, but that doesn't make it an ordinance weapon.

The nova cannon is not ordnance, but neither is the Executioner. The nova cannon is AP4 and ignores cover saves, the Executioner is Heavy 3 blast and AP2. Im pretty sure the Executioner will kill more MEQ, and only a little less horde. Plus there is the 3 other guns anyway.
The punisher will on average kill just over 1 terminator with 20 shots, it really isnt better at killing anything than the battle cannon, or the other heavy weapon turrets.
The Inferno cannon is just Template* on the summary, but I heard its 12" and Hellhound is fast, are people going to keep using them?

Still, how many guard players can roll 20 dice knowing that they come from one tank, not any, and most other armies don't know this feeling either. I'm practicing my rolling so I can fit 20 dice in my hand at once.
I'll keep my hellhounds for orks and nids, but switch with a banewolf for SM and CSM.

Frankly I'm doubtful the Vanquisher will be able to fire standard S8 AP3 blast shells. If it can, unless it's just gratuitously overpriced for the option, I dont see ever running standard Russes again.
If it can only fire anti-tank shells, it needs some way to get BS4 or generally be more accurate than basic BS3. If it doesnt have an option for that, it had better be dirt cheap. Otherwise I'm not sure it'd be worth using. :\
Other than that, the triple/quintuple plasma variant is the only new variant I think much of. The other stuff just doesnt fill a needed role.

There is one plus the the punisher, you get 6-7 wounds every turn its firing. With a battle canon, you get a bad scatter and you have 0 wounds. Still 24 inch range, ap-, unless it is cheap, and I dont think it will be, I would go for a standard Russ.

The notion that these tanks will all be priced the same is just the OP's hypothetical, not the Codex rule.
The Vanquisher has always had the option to fire a conventional shell. It has always been an "overpowered Leman Russ." It has also always cost a lot more points than the standard Leman Russ. This was true in the first 3rd Ed. IG Codex, all the Forge World books, and the Armored Company list.
It's possible that it will change, and only be able to fire the AT shell, but that would really take away a lot of the utility of the tank, to the point that you would expect it to be cheaper than a standard Russ. Which doesn't make much sense for what the fluff describes as a "Command Tank".
