I am going to be playing Necron soon and I have a question about using the monolith on failed WBB.

Here is a situation.
You have two units of necrons. You wipe out the first unit completely. They are within 6" of the second unit and the second unit is within 18" of a Monolith.

My question is can he re-roll the WBB for the first unit if he decides to port the second unit through the monolith. The rule says you can only re-roll the WBB for the unit that gets ported. That should mean that if you wipe out a unit it should would not be elgible to going through a monolith correct since you do not actually join a unit unless you make the WBB?

Few Points to make here, When you check WBB, its done on a Model by Model Case, not by Unit.
Only those models in the wiped out unit that are within 6" of another undamaged Necron model of the same type get to make their WBB rolls. This that aren't don't get a WBB roll.

So the procedure for what you describe would be as thus:
1) Check Range for each individual model to see if they are within 6" of another undamaged model of the same type. Those who are not, get no WBB attempt and are removed from play.
2) Roll your WBB rolls, those who pass now join the unit that allowed them to make a WBB roll. Make a Note of how many failed.
3) Activate your Monolith Mumbo-Jumbo. Those Necrons who failed their WBB, now have a second go. Those who pass emerge from the Monolith undamaged.

So basically, those who pass the first time join up with the other unit and count as part of that unit from now on, those who fail are teleported and roll again, with the ones who pass emerging from the monolith without the ones who passed the first time. Those who were not within 6" at the start of the movement phase do not get a WBB roll at all, and as such cannot benefit from the Monoliths power.

Okay, I think I know where I messed up. I assumed that if a unit was wiped out then it could not go through the monolith, but from how you laid it it, they can go through the monolith, but only after the first two steps.

I hate having to try and remember all these rules because I have learned that you can not trust the other person to actually know (honestly or dishonestly) the rules for his own army.

Don't get me started

Its worse for Necrons because they have ancient rules that work really really poorly with the current edition of the game, but C'est la Vie.

Easiest way to do things is anything that is in the slightest bit exceptional (i.e. not Normal Movement or Shooting I have found) to look it up the first 10 or 30 times until you know it off by heart

This is the correct interperetation. If the unit is wiped out, it cannot be targeted by the portal, as they are not a unit anymore. You need at least ONE model standing in the unit to use the portal.

The idea is that it takes extra effort and time to write properly, and they’d rather save the time. If you can still be understood, what’s the harm? While most of the time a sloppy post CAN be understood, the use of proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling is generally seen as respectable and desirable on most forums. It demonstrates an effort made to be understood, and to make your post an easy and pleasant read. By making this effort, you can often elicit more positive responses from the community, and instantly mark yourself as someone worth talking to.

I'm pretty sure they remain a unit even when all downed (otherwise downed necrons wouldn't fall back with their unit, which they do.) though I could be wrong. Whats your basis for saying they arn't a unit anymore? (not trying to be snarky, just that its 0743 here and I dont wanna trawl through that awful eyesore that is the necron codex lol)

The more I think about it though the more I think I am most likely wrong. Assuming I am wrong, Could you not then, roll for WBB for the models originaly in Unit 1, those that pass join Unit 2, then teleport Unit 2 and get the rerolls for those who tried to WBB into Unit 2 but failed?

No, because only the models that got back up and joined unit 2 are part of unit 2. Those models which failed to get back up are part of unit 1 which now no longer exists.

Well that sorts it then =)

So yup, wiping out a unit denies it a re-roll
