Ok - a very late report on the Kalm tourney earlier this month.

Friday - took off 1/2 the day and drove down early with my friends CorwinDal and Gimli. Grabbed a steak at O'charleys and met up with Micah and about 10 other guys for a Battle Fleet Gothic tourney. First time I've played that in years. 3 games - against Space Marines, and 2 Imperial Fleets. No idea where I placed but was most likely middle of the pack. Lots of beer and good guys to play against. Good fun and great job by Micah, who was a cool guy despite my unprovoked gas assault.

Saturday is here. Start the day with some grub in the hotel. These guys run a class act. Around 8:45 - two limo's show up to give us a lift to the Jazz Factory - a bar somewhere down town Huntsville where the tourney is at. Tables are all set up - and things are ready to go. By 9:30 I've started on my second beer of the day.

I ran a pretty fluffy Space Wolf Army - just to have fun and finally use my forgeworld SW termies. My army list:

Game 1 - against a Tau player - nice guy - his first game of 5th edition. Fortune smiled on me due to turn 1 night fight and some aggressive deployment of stealth suits. My LR get's immobilized on turn 1 and turns into a pillbox - with great firearcs to shoot my enemy. I drop his big nasty gun tank and start working on his broadsides - the biggest threat to my army. I basically win the battle of attrition against him. Highlight is my Battle leader and retinue charging into one of his leaders in a suit and squad of firewarriors. I'm thinking everyone dies and we have Tau cutlets for supper. Instead I do only a single wound on the commander with my Battleleader - he hits and wounds me twice back - I fail both ST and he dies. Fortunately the retinue smacks around 7 or 8 firewarriors without a loss. He fails and breaks with both units. One of the objects was to kill an enemy HQ - which we both fulfilled in a comedy of errors HTH. I score around 15 points.

Lunch - catered BBQ...Dewers and 7 sounded good with it - so had a few of those.

Game 2 - Space Marines. Played a guy from New Orleans who had a nicely painted SM army featured here on the Kalm website http://thekalmbefore.blogspot.com/ (Dale Oser's amy about 1/2 way down). Dale gave me one of the better arse kickings in a 40K game I've taken in awhile. He had termies with TH/SS with a termy librarian with gate. The main objective was to get a counter into a piece of terrain (hq). Secondary was to keep the enemy out of the terrain (hq), and tertiary was KP. One turn 1 Vulkan and a tact squad drop pod right in front of my Hq that I'm holding with the small GH squad. 1 rhino is dropped I bring the other squad over to get rid of this. If a fit of pathetic HTH we tie first round - he wins second my guys break and he escorts them off the board. Took the battle leader and retinue to get rid of them later on. My Ven dread, termies, and LR focus on the big termie squad to try and get rid of them. Hurt them some but they managed to get the counter and gate it back to their hq. Rest of the game involved his guys killing the rest of my guys off. I did manage to keep him out of my hq at the end of the game for 4 points - but gave up the max of 20. Well played Dale - we need a rematch! Smile

After Game 2 - all hope was lost - but Makers and coke is a great cure for depression - especially a whole bunch of them.

Game 3 was against a guy (Matthew?) from Huntsville who'd I'd played in BFG the night before. The BFG game was very tactical and a lot of fun. Figured this to be the same. He ran a LR heavy Khorne army (4 LR's). This game also turned into a great tactical matchup (despite my high alcohol level impairment). I believe missions were around getting units into enemy deployment, killing highest point cost unit and holding objectives. I was fortunate to hurt his LR's early and get in close. Had a brutal HTH with Kharn, my wolf lord and retinue, and some berzerkers. Amazingly I won at the end. Still he wound up getting the primary, we tied on the secondary on highest point cost unit and I got the tertiary. A 16 to 14 minor loss - basically a draw. Again a well fought game and a great opponent - my favorite out of three great opponents.

All the games were fun and all my opponents high end guys. I'd play any of them again.

The Kalm is a GREAT tourney - highly recommend it. The folks from HAAWGS do a fine job. Warboss and Micah are stand up folks - what the game is all about!
