I was absent-mindedly perusing Imperial Armour I today while ripping the sponsons off of my Russ, and something occurred to me: Leman Russ Conquerors. During 4th Edition they were rarely taken and seen as something of a white elephant. They frankly weren't worth the five extra points that allowed you to get a teensy bit more mobility out of the tank while trading out your big beefy battle cannon for the lower caliber conqueror cannon. However, it's beginning to look like this variant (and other non-ordinance Russes) could have found their niche. On the standard Leman Russ Battle Tank, firing the main gun means that you can move no further than 6" and that you can fire no other weapons. In a Conqueror/Exterminator/Executioner/Annihilator, firing your main weapon means you can have moved no further than 6". If you i indeed move, then you can take a shot with your conqueror cannon, autocannon etc and then fire the defensive goodies that have fallen so far out of favor like the storm bolter and heavy stubber. If you remained stationary, you can (theoretically) fire... that's right... sponsons! This startling realization has taken me quite by surprise. Conquerors can zoom forward and become the mobile fire bases they were supposed to be. Exterminators can still lay down a hail of anti-infantry brutality. What a wonderful concept. Anyone care to point out a flaw in my reasoning before I glue all my sponsons back on and file down the battle cannon barrels?
