Dave Taylor at Wargames Illustrated.

Wargames Illustrated

As speculation mounts as to our plans for Wargames Illustrated I thought it was time to share some more information and try and stimulate some of that hobby activity that is the key to creating great content. What we have planned is in essence very simple. From issue 260, on newsstands May 21st, you will see the new WI. This new magazine will be 112pages, up from 80, and contain more content than ever before. You will be getting a free frame of the Perry’s new British Napoleonic’s on the cover and inside a wider selection of articles. The added pages allow us to add both some FOW content and another few articles to enhance the selection in the current magazine. We are going to cover every game, scale and period on the market and bring you the best collections of models from around the world. WI offices are based in Nottingham or the “lead belt” as a friend recently told me it has become know given the excess of miniature companies in the city. From the UK the magazine has always had a steady flow of content but to open this up to the global community we have brought on board a new team member who will effectively be the WI man in the US. Roving reporter, hobby nutter and addict of all things miniature related Dave Taylor will support the UK team and help create and drive content from the US and themed for the US.

I'm pleased to hear that WI is continuing publication. The inclusion of more US based content will help fill the pages and attract more sales overseas.

I wouldn't put any GW content in an independent magazine I was editing.

Why give GW free publicity? If they want some decent content they've got their own mag.

Just to argue, they might do it to broaden the appeal of the magazine and attract all the dispossessed WD readers (like most of us here on Dakka).

In the past, WI has run quite a bit of material for Warhammer Historical, such as army lists for ECW and The Great War, as well as a couple of things for Legends of the High Seas. I doubt they'd do anything for the mainstream GW games.

QFT. I was thinking similar thoughts myself. If WI is truly about the miniature wargaming hobby, then having some GW-specific articles could really appeal to those of us who've given up on the uselessness of White Dwarf, but still want a hard copy GW fix of some kind.

Wow, that was great. Nice to see you digging up 6 month old threads so you can find ONE post where Dave got something wrong.

Bravo!

EDIT: Just saw that you posted something similar in another thread today. Way to go, you really got him!

Great news, it was a crime for Dave to not be getting published somewhere! I've got fingers crossed for some FoW stuff from you now Mr Taylor

I flicked through the latests copy of WI 2 days ago and it was ok, but still not enough of what I want for me to buy it. The cover had a nice phoenix rising from the flames on it, and there were some nice big adverts for flames of war, but no big FoW features beyond a couple of reviews. As soon as WI starts publishing regular FoW articles I'll be picking it up, so it sounds like I'll be getting the issue with the free napoleonics that was mentioned!

I know it came out wrong, but I wasn't so much trying to have a dig at him as at the fanbois who take his word as gospel and flame the unbelievers. They really should learn to think for themselves. Well, they know who they are. Or not.

Is that magazine worth a feth? I mean, anyone here read about it? I'll be honest, last thing I need is more game systems, I ain't buyin, so I am not sure I could really justify it. Or even really be interested.

Depends.

If all you play is GW games then it's going to be of little interest to you.

If you like historical stuff, then it's worth a look.

Absolutely true.

I think it would be possible to make a decent magazine entirely about 40K and people would enjoy reading it and you could even get advertising from all the 40K/SF related companies except GW.

Unfortunately GW no doubt would stop it by means of copyright law.

Hi guys

Thanks for the support. I'm really excited about this opportunity. Not only do I get to work with many of my former colleagues in a great, idea-filled environment, but I get to talk to a lot of people across the US about cool toy soldiers.

For those of you who know Wargames Illustrated and have picked it up from time to time (or even religiously) we plan to keep running many articles that cover all periods, game systems, and scales. I've been talking quite a bit my counterpart in the UK, Dan, who has worked on the magazine for the last five or so years, and combining our thoughts with those of the guys in the BF office in NZ I think we're going to keep many of the best aspects of the magazine, as well as evolving a stronger style (through small themes for each issue, and a slightly different interior style) and broaden the international appeal by soliciting more international contributions. Even aspects like an improved distribution chain in North America should improve accessibility on this side of the pond.

One interesting difference between working on White Dwarf and working on Wargames Illustrated is that when I worked on WD it was almost entirely "internally generated" while WI is almost entirely "externally generated". This will continue with Wargames Illustrated as we want to get great articles from subject matter experts in whichever particular period we're looking at. While I like to think I have a very broad sense of history and military conflicts, I'm well aware that my depth in any particular period is not as good as thousands of others around the world. To that end I'll be chatting with people who have that depth of knowledge and who can write well about it, and working with the WI team to bring the wargaming world a great magazine covering the opportunities that historical gaming brings, both popular and esoteric, in a well-rounded balance.

I'm already starting to work on a variety of armies in a variety of periods, so hopefully I'll be able to meet the challenges before me.

If you're interested in the 40K stuff I've been doing, you could always check out my blog (link in sig).

Cheers (and thanks again)
Dave

PS. I thought you could use those crazy guns in the Nobz box to make Flash Gitz? At least that's what I would do ; )

Congrats to DT for him getting the ed position at WI. However I think that what you will see is a huge influx of articles that pertain to BF's FoW. I say this because WI was purchased by BF so it's only natural that this will happen. Also there has also been an intrest by some of those who game FoW that they should get their own mag, much like WD, I think that this will do in the interim.
The other thing about this move the way I see it, is BF pushing to make FoW even more mainstream than what it has become. There are still alot of historical grognards out there who don't accept FoW as a historical game and I see this as a move towards that end. So in that light it made sense for BF purchasing WI. While it may not lose any of the historical content already in it I do believe you'll see a heavier dose of BF driven articles/ads and what not. Just my two bolter rounds worth tho'.

I read this magazine. Its not for childern or people that don't want to actually read. There are no or little self promotional pretty pictures, or self grandizing, so the 40K crowd and GW games won't work in this magazine. It is a serious article magazine about wargaming actual battles on the table at various scales.
One example was The Civil War. There are various specific things that it spoke of, and went into as much depth as some of your history books out there do. The Articles are serious information pieces, and have excellent detail and explination about facits of the battles, and it takes more then an hour to read the book.
It is a serious article included magazine with various things with the wargames aspect.
If you think GW is expensive, you have no idea of some of the things that are out there. 5mm, 15, 25, 28, 54 mm there are all aspects of wargames that are includeed in the mag.
Dave, congrats on the job. I read this mag and it is a very good reference and history source, as well as a good idea generator. You have a good job cut out for you on this mag.
