anyone ever tried water based wood stain for dipping, or painting on stuff like a wash? I'm gonna be painting some big rocky terrain pieces so I was thinking I could just use gray primer and a dark stain to wash it for shading.. will the water based stuff work for that?

I, just today, tried a Behr stain that I believe is water based, as it says 'cleans up with water' on the can.

It was a little thick initially, so I thinned it some with water. It then seemed to be ok, but it is still drying, so I don't know for sure how they'll turn out. I'll try to take some pictures when they're done.

The Behr line (found at Home Depot) seems pretty cool, as they have all sorts of colours. I actually got a purple stain (for use dipping pink horrors).

cool maybe i'll try there, I was gonna go to home depot anyway. I just got the GW ruins for some generic club terrain, so I wanna just build it and paint it up quick

Yes, did that with genestealers, worked. Most of the time, wood stain is just cheap acrylic paint, so no problem.

Painted armies: 3000+ Nurgle CSM. Converted, yet unpainted armies: Too many.

Water based cannot stick over an oil based product without primer. Keep that in mind. Also anything coming out of a spray can will be oilbased unless it specifically says waterbased.

hmm. well, I was just going to use gray primer and then paint the stain right over that. It's either that or spray black and drybrush gray, I just figured the wash would be quicker.

I was gonna go with the Army Painter shaders, but I thought this would be cheaper and better for me since it's not oil based.
