So I don't normally play necrons, but have had them inflicted upon me a couple times, with mixed results. My group is starting a tournament and I suggested to the Necron player the following list:

1- Lord, destroyer body, warscythe, and Res Orb.
2*10- Warriors(obligatory troops)
3- Wraiths
8- scarabs
1- Monolith

all for under 1000 pts.
Now before I get hosed by the experianced Necron players here, just hear me out.
Since the games will be for Victory Points, we set the Warriors as a firebase, deep strike the Lith(to transport the warriors later on behind or close to enemy units, and wreak havoc), and send in the Wraith's with the lord to take out enemy units. And the scarabs, they are just an added bonus and we send them to hunt after shooty units to tie them up.

I figured this list would get hilarious reactions and go for a shock and awe tactic.

~6,000 2/1/0
~1000 (still under construction, and may not continue this until new codex comes out...I'm going to be waiting a while)

It is ok... the only problem is the wraiths... they are really quick and good when attacking in CC but are pretty weak still, just as easy to kill as a necron warrior, plus, if they are staying with lord, they won't be able to make use of their wraith flight, hope this helped

good point that. However my counter would have to be that since the lord has a res orb, the wraiths would be able to get back up no matter what takes them down. and worse comes to worse, we use the monolith to attempt to bring them back using WBB.
Or I could just be totally wrong about that. Mostly I'm thinking defensively while still be offensive(much like I do with my other armies).

Uh..the lord is on a destroyer body. He can keep up with them. So they can't phase through cover. Big deal, they all ignore terrain anyway.

exactly. I played against a friend a while back, and to be sportsmanlike, we switched codices. He played my Eldar and I played his Crons in a 2000 point battle. He took some units I didn't expect, one of which was a group of firedragons with exarch and pheonix lord, Fuegan. I ran two 3 man squads of wraiths and they managed to tie up the firedragons for a good 4 turns(it was a 6 turn battle, also this was back before 5th ed. came out.)
The point of the list is shock the opponent. Once the monolith hits the board, the opponent won't necessarily know what to go for. Should he go for the warriors on the other side of the board? or should he take out the lith? will he even have units available to do either? Any heavy weapons he takes may be tied up with scarabs...or wraiths...who knows? we can only speculate, no matter what we say, what ultimately matters is what goes down on the board.
I'm not even sure this guy will actually go with this list...I mostly made it for the lols.

How about:

Destroyer Lord: Res Orb, Phylactery, Warschythe: 205

20 Warriors: 360

4 Destroyers: 200

Monolith: 235

Exactly 1000

Monolith deepstrikes, Warriors come out and wreak havoc, Destroyers come out and take out remaining infantry and weak tanks, and Destroyer Lord assaults heavy firepower units so they can't shoot at you!

actually I tested this list out recently and it's pretty devastating. Of course, it's only really been played against space wolves and thousand son marines. (she turned one of my scarabs into a chaos spawn...how does that work?)

The scarabs can make it across the board in about 2 turns from their starting position, as can the wraiths and lord. Scarabs can tie down any long range firepower like snipers or devastator squads, and can slow down assault marines for a turn or two. In the case of the thousand sons, they took out a 4 man squad of thousand sons, their accompanying sorceror, and the sorceror lord that was attached. The wraiths ended up takin on her havocs and terminators.(I rolled really well on the terms.)

In the case of the monolith, I usually have that deep strike in and cause a bit of havoc on any remaining units, you know...tie them up with warriors and teleport the warriors out giving them their a second wbb roll and shooting the crap out of the unit. at 1000 pts, I am not counting on anything more than 5 man squads of chaos space marines.
