I can't believe I'm finally registered! I've been lurking so long that I've become quite nervous of actually posting anything. Well, 'ere we go...

HI GUYS! My name is Phill, I'm a South African Warhammer 40k fanatic that's been pining for a set of my own for many years now. Bought my first White Dwarf when I was 12 and never had the cash to start my own army. Since models are freakishly expensive here in SA (because of import costs) and War Gaming shops are relatively rare (so they can pretty much ask any price they want) I've been collecting any W40k art and mags that I can get my hands on. But good news! I've ordered my first set (AoBR) and it'll be here next month and I'm about to burst with excitement!

If you don't mind, I'd like to ask you guys some newbie questions...

Firstly, I can't decide if I'm going to take the whole set. Someone I know is willing to buy the Space Marines out of the box from me. This would allow me to get more orky boyz, which would be ideal to get my dream orky army started. But since I'm more interested in modelling and painting might want to keep the marines incase I get bored of painting things green. (My girlfriend says I should convert the dreadnought like this) I can't decide! ARGH!

Secondly, is it too ambitious to want to make my own army off the bat? I'm bored with the "official" colour schemes and armies. Don't get me wrong, I love seeing a well painted model, but Ultramarines are so... bland. I want to get started with my Orks by trying to make them look like a Imperium experiment gone wrong: In an attempt to "tame" orks, the Imperium lobotomised a bunch of feral orks and kept them in observation on a distant penal colony planet. The experiment failed horribly, now these orks are on the loose with weapons made of medical equipment, prison shanks, zipguns and looted Imperium gear. I want to make their uniforms look like a mix between prison overalls (with gangsta bandanas, cigarettes tucked behind ears and wife-beaters) and psych-ward patient gowns. Lotsa green stuff work.

Take note, I've never worked with this stuff before but I paint and draw a lot. Should I lower my expectations, at least for now?

@Deff: I live in Somerset West, WP. Closest Warhammer "hub" is either Cape Town or Durbanville, both are about an hour's trip. I'd love to start playing against some local guys, if you're closeby then gimme a shout!

I did find the marines a little boring to paint right ou of the box. The orcs did seem to have more variety. Best of luck whatever you choose.

Do what you want, you're paying for the miniatures. just remember there is an opponent and alot of confusion regarding mini types can be generated if you go too far.
