Subject: Salvage's Countdown to Crossroads & Beyond [Ogres / Warriors of Tzeentch / BFG / 40K]
|

Omnipotent Lord of Change

The Goal:
Painted 2250 point Warriors of Chaos army, to be premiered at the Crossroads GT in upstate New York September 25-27. I've been obsessing about this army for months, shopping the list over and over and amassing models, and even though this is a week early (6 months + 1 week until the blue dice drop), I can't hold off any longer. Screw my poor half-painted ogres who I might have half a chance with, I need to get these boys in blue into the line of fire and this summer is the last that I can neglect my grad studies and paint like it's fakking going out of style
The Progress Thing:
RED = Not Yet Bought
WHITE = Box
GREY = Built
BLUE = PIP
DARK BLUE = Complete
9 units + 3 characters makes Tzeentch happy
The List:
Is very locked down, but will be kept under wraps for a little while yet. I leave it to you all to conjecture
The Pics:
I hope to have pics for you every week, even if they're of very little progress (3 months of those 6 months will be grad school for me, including finals in a month from now ... but I'm really looking forward to having stuff to build and procrastinate with). So let's see ...
I needed a box, any box, ...
... to pack a load of chaos into.
The horde of stuff assembled on the bed. Apparently planning on watching The Cell later, go fig.
I'm absolutely giddy at the prospect of tearing into those new shrinkwrapped lovelies. Been too long since I sunk my teeth into a nice new boxed set, lots of used and stripped models of late. And a side note, but only the warhounds and the glue were bought online - all others were bought from FLGS's (or off Wehrkind, thanks man).
The Countdown: 190 DAYS
Alright Dakka, the clock is ticking

Looks like a fun project ahead of you. 190 days should be enough as long as you keep at it. I've heard great things about the new Chaos plastic kits, so assembling should be fun & easy.

@ Chaotic - Hey, VHS is totally sweet! The bummer is that the VCR is relegated to the baby TV, not the uber- HD monster ... @ Deff Dread - Thanks for the luck, and yea I think smashing heads is about what I can hope for with these lads. Skulls for the corruscating throne! @ Human - 6 months seems doable to me too, even with 3 months of school and 1 month of being out of town on work. That's still 2 months of as much painting as I can stomach. Not to ruin the surprise, but I'm planning on giving the GeeDub paint sprayer a shot to get the necron abyss down easy. @ Vak - Honestly I've done 0 painting and built 3 models while school is actually in session . Though my winter and spring breaks have been pretty productive, and I've gotten a lot of games in cause breaks from reading = awesome @ Luna - Ha, glad you like it! Psyched to start filling that puppy in. Tonight I made myself a beverage, tore open shrinkwrap and swam around in the new sprue goodness: Perfect fit. Next up: basing. Also note Skodge the pet spawn frolicking in the base box. He'll be leaving his previous job as a fiend in my 40k demon army and joining the ranks as a unit filler and mascot for Tzeentch's legions. Now I have two questions. First, paints don't really go bad if I buy them now and don't use them for couple months, right? I've got a 25% coupon for the LGS and lots of paints to buy (I own no blue paint ), and the coupon expires end of the month. Second, should I be washing these plastic sprues? Let soak in soapy water for a bit or something? I've never done that but since I'll be basing for the next week or so I've got the time. The Countdown: 189 DAYS - Salvage

You know, you're 110% right. Last Friday I spent 1.5 hours cleaning 1 knight and horse, and had to give up. The new plastic cavalry are really great, and the horses are amazing, but I just can't stand all those moldlines and then having to paint more or less 2 models for the price of 1 ... Building all these spiky chaos dudes alone is going to make me go nuts, let alone powering through all that painting by Sept.
So we're changing the game up.
New Goal:
Get ogres painted up to 2250 points for Crossroads. The big guys deserve it, are halfway there, are entirely built and nearly all primed, and let's face it, I actually know how to play the army unlike this fairly conceptual tzeentch madness.
Secondary Goal:
Build up 1500 points of Warriors of Tzeentch, cavalry-free and for a points level I'm really getting interested in. Paint them at my leisure, continuing the blog past the ogres getting spruced up for the GT.
Tertiary Goal:
Secret and random projects! Perhaps in the (grim)dark future!
Dualing Progress Thingies:
WoT:
OK:
Pics:
Last week I built the last model for the ogres (maneater w/ brace of handguns + heavy armor) and also started messing with a scout + pigiron helmet hi-tek marine idea I've been kicking around. Sorry for the cluttered pic, I honestly didn't believe my new cam was actually taking clear pics, so just snapped the one. Really psyched about the striped down scout, I'll see about some more pics for those interested.
1500 points of WoC! Ish! So tonight I built the trays for the tzeentch guys, which took me a really long time but then I was being pretty anal about them. Have yet to GS the gaps clean We're pretending that the 2x cav bases over there are a 50mm.

Update!
Loads of building in the last couple weeks, though not necessarily all (square base) chaos ... Let's get right to it:
15 Warriors + Spawn Filler! Shields are in a pile to the left of this pic, will be painted seperate. Standard is awaiting green stuffing, and I need to decide how much I hate the gap where the warrior front meets the back. Probably not enough to GS all of them!
Desolator + Idolator! I need to get these painted for Games Day in less than a month, so hopefully will jam big mama + lil' baby out in the next week or two. BFG is loads of fun to paint The battleship is being proped up by that piece of cork, as it's way too backheavy for where they put the hole in the belly. Ah well, clearly chaos is all about wheeling with their flagships
Scouts + Pig Iron heads! 40k is certainly fun to build, so already burned my first box of scouts this week. Have many more of these lads planned for an all-scout force, and I'm liking the look so far. The scout plastics are pretty decent too, though the arms SUCK as far as lining up goes. I'm wondering if the arm pairs really only fit for the shotguns, cause the bolters certainly don't line up too well. I guess when I do some shotties I'll find out ...
One of the most fun aspects of the scouts is that I've got no schedule for them, and scout boxes are cheap enough I can pick one up every couple weeks and toss them together at my leisure. As far as schedules go, the ogres are 100% primed now, and I've got those 2 BFG ships + a greater demosaurus for my CSM to get done by Games Day. Less than a month, can I relearn painting AND write 3 term papers in that time???

Heh I was wondering when you were going to fill in your tracking diagram to have some actual data in it!
When it comes to the horses, and really, this army in general, I really think it is time you come over to the "Base, Highlight, Wash, Highlight" school of painting.You are going to kill yourself having to do that many less than thrilling horses and line guys if you keep your normal level of meticulous detail picking.
Damn though, this is going to be a really exciting army.
And now scouts! Sneaky, sneaky, off project work!
They look great, but you only have 188 days! How many days per model in your Tizz army is that? 4? Assuming you work EVERY day, that is not much time considering your delicate pace.
GET BACK TO THE ASSEMBLY LINE! NO JOY UNTIL TZEENTCH IS SATIATED!

I wanted the bolters to look as non-standard as possible, without actually digging them out of the scouts' hands and swapping something in. So I figure no muzzle break, no external clip makes for a vaguely hi-tek gun, nice and boxy. And really, the maximum number of rounds 1 scout can fire in 1 game is 14, I think a techpriest can pack that into an internal mag for his clone trooper skitarri enforcers

1) Tracking Diagram, Hooooo!
2) Actually, the tizz boys are going to be a step in that direction. Foundation paint blues, minimal drybrushing, washing, highlighting ftw. The more beasty elements I'm using Corai's complex blue recipe, which is going to require me to learn to blend. Wehr, you can be sure to be enlisted to tell me how that works (again).
3) Thanks, I'm still psyched to get the blue boys on the table, but right now I'm shooting for 1500 painted before 2010, with 2000 to follow right after that - chaos lords really devour points. I've got Ultraforge plans to get me to 2250, which again is just 1 model difference from 2000
4) True, building the scouts wasn't the most efficient use of time (but hey, I was supposed to be researching for a paper this week!), though it was fun. Though do note that I'm not doing Tzeentch for Crossroads, but finishing the other half of the ogres. Which is still 15+ models, each taking a reliable 6 hours a piece when I can get into a rhythm. Most of that is happening in July, Lady Luck willing ... For now I've got to get Games Day painting done, BUT I'm ahead on that, got the BFG ships down to "detail" stage, then just wash and scorpion green glowiness and that's 2 of 3!

Hehe probably a good idea all around. The big guys do deserve their day in the sun, and you will need some practice getting used to troops that actually die ever. Plus it will provide some nice closure for the Ogre army, one last hurrah before you start the new army. Less hanging out distracting you will be good

Well Dakka, there's 2000 points of chaos BFG ...
... and a gakky pic so you can't see the colors well, thank god.
I can't even express how much I want to blow my brains out over fething that desolator over. Two weeks of my scant free time making it nice and baby blue, then fething DESTROYED IN SECONDS by applying chestnut ink that wasn't dilluted enough. AND in such a haphazard way that not only is the color RUINED but it looks like garbage too.
More awesome is I'm taking the fleet to Games Day to show off. Well, I guess I'll stick to 1500 points, and let the flagship rot in hell. Also, it's 2:30AM and I've got loads to do tomorrow. Great use of time, but at least I'll never touch chestnut ink again.

Thanks for the kind words, I do appreciate them. Woke up feeling better(ish), snapped some shots in the sunlight:
So the battleship is obviously way more grunged up. I like what the chestnut does to the metal a lot, but it's always been a balancing act with griming up the ice blue. I did think of a fluff justification for the desolator looking like hell - there are apparently no desolators in Imperial service, all of them having defected, and as such they're especially ancient and have been lurking in the warp for quite some time. So there you are, extra dirty.
Though I am going to have to rechristen the ship. Originally it was going to be Distortious Maximus, but now I'm afraid it's going to have to be ... Brown Note
And don't worry Studder, Ol' Stinky here will be on hand to pummel your slammy into submission. She may look nasty but her 8 lances still work
Actually, looking at the pics I think I might try just adding ice blue highlights back on. She'll still look different from the baby ships, but will no doubt be lighter, with the grime more in the low areas ...
