YO DAKKA DAKKA!

Orks. So many orks.

I've decided to start playing orks, after bagging a load of cheap AOBR sluggas, and have added two more boxes of boyz, two boxes of gretchin, a kommandos box and a loota/burna box.

This is a thread about the story of the adventure of a work in progress.

Having assembled oh... forty orks, I'm pretty fatigued. Thats almost half the models I have here. I spread ninety bases over a playing table and tried to figure out how much time I would need to assemble and paint my first 1000 points of green-skinned carnage..

The 'yellow' in the thread title refers to the pretty simple yellow scheme I'm going to use... that is, dags, icons and badges are being picked out in yellow. Refer to the Ork Nob in my gallery page. I always wanted to build a Bad Moons force since their 2nd. ed background, they were the most appealing, but also most unfeasible army to collect as a kid with limited (no) budget. Sluggas don't a Bad Moons army make, in my opinion, so it's "Gutrot's Orks with Yellow Bits" until I think of something better. Suggestions welcome.

Will update this thread when I've got about 75% assembled.

That's the problem with horde armies, you get fatigued at some point before the army is usable. I've built WHFB OnG army and 40k IG army and they both had the possibility to add much more than just rank and file troops and be effective. Build something else for a change to get refreshed.

And give us some shots of the tide when it is assembled.

Thanks Gutteridge; I'm still not really happy with the yellow, but I never am. It's solid Iyanden Darksun over the bulk of the shield, then the metal bits picked out. Watered down flesh ink wash, then metal was rehighlighted followed by golden yellow 'heavy highlighting' and a bit of white mixed in for the edges.

I presently have 55 Orks, my Kommandos and Lootas, and two boxes of Gretchin assembled. Picked up another box of grots today.

Standing right behind you...

So, if you want us to review them you must first post visual images of the models in question.

This is a blog thread, not a gallery. Yet. As usual, you are free to comment as you see fit.

Here's your damned photo. Please use the gallery and look at it in 3072x2304. You can zoom in on the Ork Nob defending a pile of junk from some Eldar Gitz. Or you can note that I haven't actually glued anything to the Kommandos (packs, or nob bitz). Look at my bizarre kan scratchbuild... or don't. The thing in the corner is a WiP. It's based on cardboard - despite the warpage of cardboard, you can cut it away and use the scenery feature on a full-sized piece of terrain once you've done the fiddly work.

Now this is a baaaad photo. (Still working on the feet! The base-dividers are for stability)

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

Okay, you're just going to have to trust that I've assembled 90 Orks and 30 Gretchin. I played an 1150pt game (four actually) at an Easter Saturday tourney with them and didn't do great. Tabled an Eldar player, lost to another ork horde in a Capture the Flag sort of mission, drew with an Azrael/Ezekiel DA list on quarter objectives (I couldn't hurt him, he couldn't kill me), and almost got into solid combat with a Tau gunline.

Since I field 'Ard Boyz, and they did well, I've so far converted at least 23 with appropriate proctection. Even started to paint some - see below. Skins done, one boy done up to standard in my intended scheme. A few items of scab red and other clothing should mix things up nicely as I go along.

Also see my nob with kustom shoota/shield thing, which is basically still a slugga and 'eavy armour. Made with bits from the Nobz plastic kit, I highly recommend it. It's a great source of extra armour plates, you get three klaws and two cybork CCWs that could count as klaws. The 'Uge Choppas are just awesome. I'll probably never field foot nob squads competitively, but they look great.

Construction yet to come - eight killa kans and converted Kommandos...]

Oh yes, does anyone have any tips for PAINTING STRIGHT LINES? The hazard stripes on the choppa, I mean. Anyone know a simple accurate tech?

i draw lines with a pencil when i do stuff like hazard lines then just paint over the lines you drew

dont forget to use your trusty metal ruler, measure twice, pencil it once!

A couple more 'ard boyz with marine bits, in progress.

I like how they're turning out - individually interesting but uniform in their general spiky menace, which is what originally attracted me to collecting a force. The yellow dags are something I like, and will stick with as a theme. They can replace hazard stripes too - much easier to paint!

More orks. Priming and painting six at a time, doing five grav tanks for a tournament at the moment so slow progress. They're getting better looking with each batch...

A bit of blacklining helps the yellow dags to stand out. I'm doing it late at night, and poorly, so far.
