Ok so I hear a lot about the Tamiya Smoke x-19 paint so while at my FLGS I picked up 3 pots to try out. Now I hear its pretty thick and my main use will be to replace the badab black wash. So I have questions for regular users of smoke.

1. dilution ratio for wash? And what do you dilute it with?
2. cleaning brushes after use? Water ok? Or should I have purchased the thinner?
3. what other things can I use it for?

I've seen a lot of people use smoke to get through silver metals quickly on their models. But has anyone used on a whole model with flesh showing.

PICTURES PLEASE IF YOU CAN!

Not really what you are asking for, but I am a big fan and user of vallejo smoke which has a consistency like this:

I love the finish for anything metallic, oily and greasy and normally only water it down 50/50 for metals. It is also a really good colour for fuel, see the fuel spill at the rear of this tank:

There I did about 20% smoke, 80% water for the right mix.

I dont think I would use it for an all over wash unless I was doing some very steampunk stuff.

Hopefully there are some similarities that will carry across and be of interest to you?

Thanx for the info legoburner I have both vallejo game and model color sets but I had to order online. I can't find a shop near me that carries them and when I ask if they will in the future, they say vallejo requires a $3000 commitment to carry their stuff :( But I can get Tamiya whenever I want.

The dipping method is cool for customers but for my own models I'd like to have a brush on 10 minutes or less dry time.

Not sure if your FLGS is pulling your leg or not, but unless Vallejo has changed some thing crazy any shop that has an account with Alliance should be able to get that stuff in single bottels. There is also plenty of on line retailers who carry the stuff, Like the Warstore, if your FLGS wont. So the next time you need a few things just add that tot he order and BANG!. I love the Vellejo smoke, use it all the time.

I've been using Smoke for years, it's great, especially over metallics. It's certainly a lot thicker than the GW washes, more like a varnish in consistency. I recommend getting some thinner - eventually your Smoke will get very thick and goopy otherwise. Smoke's only real downside is that it dries glossy, unlike GW's washes which dry nice and matte - unless you want a glossy finish of course
