Which type of Ork army is the best - ones with lots of boyz or ones with lots of tanks and stuff? I wanted to ask some experienced players before I dived headlong into it.

Also, I think I already know this one, but shooty or fighty?

From what i've seen, boyz before toys is the way to go, and as for shooty and fighty, it really depends on what you have supporting them. I like using a mob of shootas as a meatshield for two mobs of sluggas in low point games, but to each his own.

The land of cotton.

I do OK with more vehicles, but this just highlights one of the nice things about Orks: You can still load up on the toys because Boyz are cheap! I can buy a Battlewagon, Looted Wagon with Boomgun, a Bunch of Killa Kans and Deff Dreds and still have points left for 90 Orks!

This is why the Ork Codex is so strong. Make it to how you play and it pretty much takes care of itself. just stay away from Flash Gits, Buggies, and Big guns and you can go wrong.

Like a fast style of play = Bikes, trukks, & wagons oh my!

Like a big group of boys = green tide

Like tinkering wit stuff = Big Mek attack, Kans, Dreds, etc...

Even got a stompa now

Thanks, guys, I think I'll go with what I was initially thinking - tanks and vehicles etc. backed up by a few squads of boyz.

yea, the way to go in small point games is to horde the enemy, pretty much overwhelming him with people. but
in larger games like 2k, i would suggest having a some sort of vehicle to carry your big guys forward to dump them off in front of the enemy. and also having a fire support for larger games is key, so be sure to have some lootas or flash gitz backing up the waaghhh.

I agree with buck nasty. i play aginst orks all the the time and theres nothing more annoying then having a big mess of boss ready to charge you. then right before there charge a bunch of lootas blast you to hell.

It's all opinion. You'll hear suggestions on both sides.
Personally, I find that I like a Speed Freak (or mostly so) force. I like 'em in Trukks & Wagons. In my experience, Orks die faster to shooting than HtH... and, with the new IG codex coming out, you're going to be seeing a LOT of shooting.
IMO, the faster you get "stuck in," the better.

With the new IG codex coming, I see an uptick in the # of KFF Meks we'll be seeing in Speed Freak lists.

As has been said, this is why the Ork Codex is one of the best out there right now (and Phil Kelly the best designer GW has). You can build almost anything with the Codex, and it will be solid. You can build a fluffy list that's still solid.

Ultimately I think the Ork Boy is one of the best models in the game, so the strongest lists will have lots. Conversely, a lot of vehicles will be a bit less strong.

An exception to all the above, is the Biker Nob list, which is something of a trick list, but still very strong even when you know what it's about.

In any case, Boyz on foot (mostly Shootas), Boyz in Trukks (mostly Sluggas), and Stormyboyz are all strong.

Lists with lots of boyz are slow to play and vulnerable to enemies with a lot of vehicles. Battlewagons are very tough for their cost and are a surefire way to deliver 20 boyz to a target by turn 2. Buggies are a cheap source of firepower and they can also block enemy movement. Blocking enemy movement is important to prevent your opponent's Land Raider(s) filled with doom from wiping out your blocks of boyz 1 or 2 units at a time.

Depends on your style of play at the end of the day, and whether you can put up with moving over 100 models up to 3 times a turn.

Personally I prefer speed freeks, just love the idea of a load of orks bombing around in trukks only getting out to "krump sum eads".

the ork codex allows for alot of useable lists so take your pick.

I like my Evil Moonz KoS variant - lots of boyz in battlewagons!
Backed up with a KFF, a nob-mob and other vehicles, with a big mob of shootas for support.

Heck, I enjoy playing a mechanized Ork list just so I don't have to move as many models. My back would get sore hunched over moving a 100+ models per turn.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

A buddy who has played Orcs and Orks for over two decades (and a bunch of other armies over the years, he owns a successful gamestore) told me the considers this the best army book/codex (ie, both game systems) ever put out by GW. I've been around a long time too, and guess I have to agree with him. Kudos Kelly!

My current ork army is a freebooting KoS. I wanted to paint them with no clan markings, and wanted a mobile assulty army (my others are DA and Tau) just to get some different play styles in there.

On foot - shootas + lootas
Mech - sluggas+choppas

But really the ork dex is full of succesful builds with different tatics. That is the one sticking point in starting orks...so many choices its hard to decide on 1 to start with.

Shoota orks are always good for flesh sheilds and shredding 5+ armour people. Against meq they will only get one kill, and then will be owned the next turn.
Sluggas can hide in a combat untill all other foes are dead and hopefully run into another before to many casualties are taken.

with sluggas its best for you to throw them in a trukk or in a mass swarm, but more damage happens if you get there first, so I say trukk

with shootas it normaly is foot with grots in front

I personally use a Big Mek/shooty list. My 1000 point list, well one of them, has a Trukk Looted Wagon, and Deff Dread and still has room for 32 boyz. Not very many Boyz but lots of shooting.

LOL....someone obviously hasn't gone up against true shooty Orks....

Just ask anyone from the Las Vegas GT about how shoota boys get ownd...rofl

Do the mathhammer...20 Shoota boys are equal or better then a full SM tac squad at shooting (and are cheaper)...and they can go all the way to 30 strong

I usually run 2-3 Battlewagons full of boys with a Big Mek w/KFF as the core of my list.

Front AV 14 that always gets a 4+ cover save, and can move up to 13" before disembarking/assaulting? Yes please.

Definently Boyz,
get about 100 of them at least - 2 x 30 Sluggas and 2 x 20 Shootas -
paint them relevetivly the same so it looks like one big mob and swarm you enemy!!!
