I’ve started work on a little project I thought I’d share with people.

I’ve done a bit of sculpting in the past but mainly for the purpose of casting from, but I want to improve my sculpting to the point where I can maybe have a go at sculpting my own complete greens and casting them up!

So, I’ve started a Salamanders Army. My logic goes like this; they heavily craft their armour and vehicles, adding scrollwork and such, so I can’t really go over the top with adding things and re-sculpting bits to make them look extra flashy.

I purchased the Black Reach set at Christmas, primarily to get the smaller rules book, so find myself with some spare figure I have no use for in my current Ravenguard Army. Some conversion and sculpting later and every marine now has a 3d raised Salamander shoulder pad (no two exactly the same) there is some interesting flames done on the flamer marine and the dreadnaught is steadily getting some interesting bits put on him two! I’ve converted one of the terminators to have a heavy flamer (One which the wife was cutting of a Chaos Terminator and had no use for so we swapped weapons!) and my next step is probably some work on the terminators, Salamanders pads, part cloaks, scaly bits, etc.

I have however gone slightly mad with the commander, currently he is going through “Changes” shall we say… his powersword is steadily morphing into a thunder hammer and his cloak is developing scales! Basically I found myself with a chunk of spare green stuff and a hour or so to kill… not going too bad actually, but almost wish I not started the cloak, that’s a bit of a serous task putting so many individual scales on!

Once I have these figures done however I need to take the army further, and I have a few ideas!

Firstly I have an old Forgeworld Vindicator and a basic Landraider sitting on the shelf which may have some extensive “Carving” done to them, but exactly what I’m not sure! I’ve considered the Forgeworld Salamanders doors, but as the idea is to stretch my own skills, that’s a no-no, so a sculpting and carving I will go!

Secondly I have always liked Ordo Xenos, and so want a unit or two of Alien Hunters, taking someone else’s brilliant idea I’m going to put together some Deathwatch marines using the rules for Sternguard Marines with Pedro Kantor as a Deathwatch Captain to go in with them, not planning to use the Pedro Kantor figure, but kit bash him out of other stuff (yet to be decided on!), with the bonus that I then get to do different chapter shoulder pads and markings as well as getting a unit I can also use with my Ravenguard! Thoughts on how to transport them would be well received, but seriously tempted by a drop pod! Nice area for some MAJOR lettering and sculpting! But would Deathwatch use a drop pod or teleporters? Discuss!

I’ll obviously need atleast another tactical squad (so I can actually field them) and…. Well, that’s where I’m stuck…. What to go with next?

I’m so not rushing this army, and to be honest may never even paint them, afterall the idea is to stretch my sculpting skills and I have plenty of other projects floating around, but if people like what I’m doing and give me some good ideas I may start a bit of a blog or something with pictures on.

Incidentally I like the green stuff work Scibol (sp) does, so I’m shamelessly stealing some ideas from there for the vehicles, but don’t like how bulky his terminators become so shying away from his work on figures.

So what do you think? Would they work on the tabletop or fall over at the first sign of a scrap? Do you Like/Hate the ideas? Where would you take them? Any advice?

Thanks in advance
Druidic

scribs termies arent bad atall, if you find them too bulky then there is a simple method to solve this, it takes longer, but gives a nice finish.

ill just give a rough idea on the legs since the rest is pretty much the same.

remove both legs at the hip joints and feet, replace them with a piece of sprue that is the same length, that will give it a rough start.
use the armour decal press method to make the armour, then simply put those pieces in place, and sculpt the legs to the same size.
by doing it this size you can chose how thin or bulky you want the legs, rather than a strict size.

Less of a question, more of a "this is what I'm upto, and yoru welcome to comment" kind of thing.

JD21290, I suppose thats the sane way of going about things, but its maybe something I'm working up to! :-)
