So GW is laying off people left and right!

And opening new stores.

Fair Oaks Hobby Center, Fairfax, VA

Gig Harbor Hobby Center, Gig Harbor, WA

Royal Oaks Hobby Center, Houston, TX

Coles Crossing Hobby Center, Cypress, TX

Empire Hobby Center, Antioch, CA

Copperwood Village Hobby Center, Houston, TX

Anyone knwo when the Fair Oaks one is opening? That's almost ridiculous. Per the earlier discussion of GW stores, this one is IN a mall!

Though maybe it's just near Fair Oaks mall and they're calling it that.... I dunno.

Gw stores used to be in the Mills malls. I think the Mills tried to play hardball and Gw said, whatever...

And being local to Va, I believe the FairOaks center is not the FairOaks mall. I could be wrong, but that's the scuttlebutt I've heard.

The Potomac Mills mall GW store shut down in Jan and the FairOaks center GW is it's replacement I think.

The Richmond VA one shut down too. And I knwo they just opened the Sterling store out by Burlington Coat Factory on Route 7.

I am not sure that it is in "Fair Oaks Center" though. It's the "Fair Oaks" "Hobby Center". I assumed that meant the mall. But maybe not...

I used to work for GW when they had a store in the Palisades Center mall in Nyack NY. It was crazy! Yes I was one of the dreaded red shirts, but I wasn't so bad =D The worse part about being in a mall was Parents would use us as a day care! You'd have these parents drop their kids off and expect us to use our toys to play with their kids.

Or you'd have people as for the latest video game...even though their was an EBgames just a few doors down!!

Such a frustrating job...the only thing I miss is the employee discount.

Houston is one of the largest population centers in the US. They have a major hobby community and since living in TX is still cheaper than both the other major population centers (LA and NYC) they can afford hobbies. Makes perfect sense to me. Especially if none of them of mall stores.

Oh but on the mall store thing they still plan to have 1-2 mall stores per region as recruitment centers that then shift them out to the stripmall sights which will eventually ship them out to the bunker. Malls just cost to much to put every store in one. They can normally put 2 strip site stores up out here for the cost of a single mall store.

Just moved from TX. That's all the Houston area needs is another Hobby Center, let alone 3! Not sure of the locations, but sure they're near near some of the more successful B&M stores that carry their product.

Being in a mall isn't too weird. My LGS is in the Stoneridge Mall in Pleasanton.

I hope they don't open more stores in dallas. Last thing we need is GW trying to kill off LGS in our area.

OTOH, I checked GW's store finder last week and they had a n independent in Maryland listed twice: Outpost obbies bought Other Realms. And then shut down.

So it's a dupe of a non-existant store.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

We had one of our local 'dead' malls become a Mills mall several years back and I had hoped for a GW store but one never materialized Now the mall isn't even a Mills mall.

No offense but why would they open a store in New Orleans? The economic factors that would make a store successful aren't there. The overall population is very small in comparison to other metro areas where stores are located. The average income is much lower than the other metro areas. I just wouldn't see a store working out in that area.

Just a personal opinion though.

GW is only opening stores in existing metro's. Hence the stores opening in houston, seatle area and LA metro. you probably wont be seeing a Hobby Center opening in a non established area for a very long time.

To the OP, there's a store in my area called the Supermall store on the site and in WD, yet is not located inside of the mall. So there is still hope!

And your homeless bums and criminals that scurried here like from Katrina. Thanks a lot.

EDIT: I'll believe it when I see it. Whith the notices of layoffs in the US at the same time it doesn't seem logical. As pointed out, maybe one additional big bunker in an easy location (GW RICE has nonexistent parking).

These things can change faster than you can bat an eye.

Having said that the Cypress location is within 2 miles of two ace barbeque joints an awesome Mexican restaurant and a Specs liquor for all your tequila needs. Thats less than 15 minutes from me-practically spitting distance!
