Tips on fielding tons of ranged units? Or are they doomed always get stuck in close combat or cant shoot into close combat.

i think you will always get stuck in close combat before you can wipe out the enemy. dwarfs may be able to do it as their ranged units can take armor and weapons

Well, there're always Dwarf or Empire Gunlines.

Depending on your army, you can probably make up a list filled up entirely of ranged units. Heavy Shooting (will need lots of artillery to help out) + Heavy Magic can cause a real hurt to enemy units before they get to you. Be aware, though, that it's hard to avoid close combat entirely, and you'll probably need at least one decent counter-attack unit, and definitely some re-directors for those tough-as-nuts units. Concentrated fire is key.
