i was just flipping through the ork codex when i noticed that painboys can be taken to lead a squad of nobz. there are lots of wargear options for the unit, but can the painboy take any of these? it does not say specifically in the codex entry.

oh yes and it says wit a painboy in the unit all models can take a cybork body does this include the painboy?

The only wargear a Painboy may take are Grot Orderlies and 'evy Armour, since he is no longer a "Nob", he is a Painboy, and as such cannot buy Wargear that Says "Any Nob"

There is a separate section under the wargear options for the Nobs, that is what a Painboy may take.

Yes Cybork Bodies includes the Painboy.

Oddly enough Army Builder lets Painboys take 'evy Armour but none of the other options that say "Any Nob". Oh well, I suppose someone will go and report that bug, before being flamed by Ghaz

No. Nobz may upgrade wargear. Painboy =/= Nob. Of course, if you want to be a right , take the upgrades for the nob and then upgrade him to painboy.

I highly doubt that works. It doesn't work in Army Builder, that great infallible resource!

I don't have my codex handy but, if I remember it correctly, you aren't "upgrading" a Nob to Painboy. You're just adding the Painboy. So, your "buy the wargear first" idea doesn't count. It's simply an attempt to circumvent the rules.
Even if you DO buy the gear first and if he IS "upgraded" from a Nob, the fact remains that he's no longer a Nob, so cannot have "Nob only" wargear.

This is correct. The wording in the army list entry is "One Nob may be a Painboy, not "may be upgraded to.."

Well having a read through the codex, I just had a bit of a mini Revelation.

The first clue was that the Painboy has his own entry, that lists the wargear a Painboy has!

So the way I see it, the nob "may be" a Painboy, in which case he ceases to be a Nob at all, and adopts the Profile of the Painboy on page 38. Since he is no longer a Nob, but instead a Painboy, with the Equipment listed in the Painboy Main Entry, rather than that listed in the Nob Entry.

So you could load up on the equipment if you wanted, but you would still lose it when the nob becomes a Painboy because you instead have that equipment (its not "in addition" to anything, its just "has this equipment".

Just my 2 cents anyway

But at any rate, they definitely cant take shooting weapons or powerklaws since they replace their choppa and slugga with doks tools and urty syringe and the weapons upgrades you replaces your choppa and slugga with.

Thats the thing, the Nob may be a Painboy. He isn't a Nob Painboy, or a Painboy Nob, or even a Nob who is Upgraded to be a Painboy. He just is a Painboy instead of being a Nob, with a separate profile, the same way that an Apothecary is not a Veteran in a SM Command Squad.

"may be a painboy and stops to be a nob"
or
"may be a painboy"
?
And all in all it doesn't even matter since none of the Nobs wargear specifically say they can only be used by nobs.
The codex restricts who can BUY which wargear, not who can USE it.

It is a Painboy, not a nob. If you have a group of 10 Apples and I say "one apple may be an orange", and you decide to utilise this great offer, you now have 9 apples and an orange. Will you try to claim the orange is an apple? They will all still be fruit (orks) but you have 9 apples (9 Nobz) and an orange (Painboy)

The argument "it doesn't say it stops being a nob" is flawed, because it doesn't have to. If the models profile doesn't say it is a Nob, then it isn't a Nob.

a painboy can take:


grot orderly
cybork body
stikkbombz

thats about it really
of course the bike is allways an option aswell.
but he is changed when upgraded, he is no longer classed as a nob, but a painboy instead, hence why they have the sub section for painboy in the unit entry.
