Hey everyone, been collecting an Ork Death Skull army for a while now and going to try me luck at a proper vehicle conversion. Only problem is im not an expert on the conversion front and so wont to try me hand at a personalised conversion. This is why i dont really want to convert a GW 40k tank until i know what im doing So i was wondering can i convert an airfix or a WW2 tank and still field it in an ork army?? And if i can, what scale should i use and what tank or vehicle best suits an ork army. Thanks for your help.

as long as you dont play at tourneys that will be fine. At a tourny they have to be like 75% GW parts.
ANYWHO I think either 1/35 or 1/48 is a good size denending on the model and whatnot. Ive seen both done and both looked good.

If I knew, I'd tell you.

If it is only for practice then go ahead. Just make sure you don't put loads of really cool stuff on it that you might want later on. Like Kingcracker said, don't build it if you intend to play it in tournaments.

ill be honest with you.
for orks to loot it size does not matter atall.
they will steal anything thats not bolted down, if it is then give them 5 more minutes to take the bolts out 1st (or rip them out)

any size vehicle will work well, but just a few key points:

if it has a cannon, most real vehicles have small barrels on them, upgrade it to a large bore gun.

make sure it looks like its ramshackle and could fall apart at any given moment.

unlike imperial vehicles, orks are neither neat nor tidy, armour plates should be tatty, falling off, and there should be alot of them.

random bubbinz like a shoota tied to the side of it for storage, random skulls and spikes, gretchin all over it.

thats just my random opinions on it, but good luck with it, and make sure you post your WIP of it

1/48 can look rather small, especially for big Ork figrues.

Check this article for more information on historical scale model kits.

I think there are three things to consider:
1) No matter the scale, the vehicle needs to be about the right size for the game you plan to play. So, a large 1/35 vehicle may just not look right, and a smaller 1/48 vehicle may not look right, either.
2) I've seen conversions that did not convincingly mask the historic vehicle they were based on. An Ork tank that looks like a Tiger II tank looses something in the translation. Also, the GW vehicles have outsized weapons and rivets, etc.
3) A good conversion is always more appealing with a good paint job.

Scale does matter to an extent.. I'm trying to use 1/25 plastic model muscle cars for Gorkamorka and it just doesn't look right unless I'm using Ork Warbosses for all the cars because regular Boyz are just too small.

The best way is to loot a rhino or some other space marine tank. because they are easy to convert just slap a few glyphs and odd metal parts on it and your done, give a nice paint job and a few nice grots and it will look great .

Don't use historic airfix models they aren't as good quality models and it is so much better loking to have a gw looted tank on the board than a historic one! Honest i play deathskulls!

my armies: :1000pts+
:750pts (work in procress) :1000pts+ Empire: wip!!!

The easiest way? Buy, trade, or steal an already painted IG vehicle. Paint some red "X"'s over the Imperial markings, and stick and Ork commander in the top hatch. Add Snots and Grots to taste. Clutter it up with Orky gear if you want.

Brings up a point. Is this for dispaly or will it see the battlefield? If it will fight, you might want to decide what kind of Looted Wagon it will be and how it will be armed. I can't figure out a Looted Wagon version of the Leman Russ that accounts for the hull mounted Las Cannon.

Now if you want to convert a GW vehicle so that it does not look looted, but homemade, the Leman Russ or chimera are kit bashable.

Best bits for a conversion are the ork trukks. Just take the parts and chop them up into the sized pieces you need. I took a leman russ and added a bunch of trukk parts to the front to make a battlewagon before the kit came out. If you've ever put together an ork truckk you can probably see how I cut them up and stuck them together:

Standing right behind you...

I'd convert a Leman Russ by just adding BattleWagon bitz onto it and glue orks hanging on.

That looks great m8, mite have to try something similar. Get myself a lemun russ tank and whack a few ork trukk bits on it then job done yeah?? In the new codex though (aint got it yet) how does a looted vehicle work - say i used a lemun russ. Is it fairly simple, dont need loads of detail but whats the basic rules. Cheers again everyone

Also not really on point but need a few more idea for ork clothy colours. getting a bit fed up of using the same old browns - fancy making a mob with different type of clothes. Any ideas on this point would be great - thanks

Also another question - can i loot weapons from other armys and set them up with my orks. For example can i use an imperial guard mortars or tau battle rifles if i convert them into orky hands. Thanks again every1

Wondering Why the Emperor Left

I was thinking about having all my Nobs set up like Flash Gitz, all with their own flair. Then I was going to split them up, and have them lead ork mobs, and have the boyz emulate their bosses individual 'Flash'. You could try something like that, or you could always just paint your different mobs, like they are from different clans, all working together in one large Waaagh.

As for the weapons, you should be fine doing just about anything, just make sure your opponent knows what he is facing.
