After going on and on about the imminent arrival of my AoBR set, my girlfriend has decided that she too wants to try her hand at the "real gentleman's sport of champion king god people" (aka Warhammer 40k)

So after looking extensively at different models on the web and skillfully parrying my attempts to persuade her to buy my SMs from me (so that I can get more Orks) she has decided that she loves Slaanesh's backstory and demonettes she wants to start a Chaos Daemon army.

Is there a set that she can get that is nice to start with that's not crazy expensive? We looked at the Spearhead set and it's really pricy for a starter set...

Cozy cockpit of an Archer ARC-5S

A boxed set of plastic Daemonettes seem like the best thing to start with to get her feet wet.

there isnt really a set about for it.
about the best bet would be check about on ebay for them, you can usually pick them up at around 20% - 40% off from some sellers (after a few buys you may get more discount aswell)

Suffused with the dying memories of Sanguinus, the warriors of the Death Company seek only one thing: death in battle fighting against the enemies of the Emperor.

Here's my advice for getting your female friend to enjoy gaming.

- Let her pick models that she likes. Let her make her own army based around the models that she likes.

- Don't ever "let" her win, but make sure that whatever army that you use to play against her is one that's about the same power level as the one she has picked.

- Don't expect her to get as into it, or as competitive about it, as you are. Some girls will get competitive, and if she does, great. But, most won't be into the competitive side of it, so don't push that on her.

- Let her take her time exploring what she likes about the hobby. If she likes troops that are sub-optimal (like daemonettes), so what, be happy that she's willing to play at all.

As for the cost - daemons can be expensive, because so many of them are metal and/or costly models. Know that going in.

A reasonable 1000 point starter slaanesh daemon army would be:

HQ: Keeper of Secrets
HQ: The Masque
Elites: 6 Fiends of Slaanesh
Troops: 12 daemonettes + Icon
Troops: 12 daemonettes + Icon
Heavy: Soul Grinder

If I knew, I'd tell you.

A good idea to start with would be a box of daemonettes, a fiend of slanesh and The Masque.

I would like to add the most important point of all o_o...

let her choose to do things on her own pace .
She'll choose when she wants to paint, when she wants to make purchases, and when she wants to game.

I'll have to second that let her make all the decisions on what she wants, advise her on whats effective but ultimately let her pick out her models to paint. Thats how my bf was with me when I first started 40k over 10 years ago.

I actually play Daemons there are some fun conversions you can do for them.

The Demon Book isn't specific, anymore.
Now you can have Demonetts, Defilers, and Slannish greater demons oh my! "Cheap" isn't part of the conversation when you KNOW your talking about your girl.
Buy what she wants and for all thats unholy, do not talk about the price.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Quick tips

1) Let her win all the time. She wouldn't be able to role with the tactical big dogs, so you don't want to scare her away just yet.

2) Use her in tournament settings to distract the opposition by wearing low cut shirts and blouses.

3) Definitely bring her around your gaming buddies down at the shop, that should extend the duration of your relationship.

4) Push the cliche sexboobhedonism codex on her. That will definitely earn her respect amongst other wargamers.

5) Learn to never expect to have sex again.

Go get em tiger!

Well... there's definitely a lot of advice NOT related to what the original poster asked in this thread

The demonettes sound like a good idea, and maybe you can put some of those marines towards a trade so that you don't have to put out more cash

Without a good starter set... definitely keep an eye on ebay, you never know

Good call on letting her decide what she wants to play. It never ends good when someone is pressured into playing something else. Also Id say get a basic force going so you 2 can play a few smaller games to get her going. That way if she doesnt like it then you didnt waste alot of cash buying a bunch of minis

Right, spoke to the lady and actually showed her this post. Here's the feedback.

Ah, ebay in South Africa is dodgy at best. But I've been looking on our local version bidorbuy.co.za and the prices are pretty much the same as in the shops.

My girlfriend thinks you're a little condesending with this post, which made me laugh btw, but you've got some good pointers there. "As for the cost - daemons can be expensive, because so many of them are metal and/or costly models" makes sense, but why haven't they released plastic models yet? Argh. But I think she'll probably go with your army suggestion

She just shrieked at a picture of The Masque that she found, so I think that's a keeper

Oh HELL no! In this day and age of gender equality and women's rights there is NO excuse why she can't buy her own damn models! Don't tell her I said that.

And the plus side, if she does quit she can give the minis to me and I can have more bitz

Thanks so much for the feedback, guys. I'm really enjoying the community here at DakkaDakka, you guys (and girls, of course) are really helpful and insightful.
