Hey Dakka,
I have been staring at all of the Deffkoptas that I have gotten recently from the AoBR set (as I have purchased quite a few for the Boyz), and I came up with an idea for coverting my Koptas in Warbuggies.

I was wondering what you all thought of the idea of making them look like SM attack bikes, and use them as the buggies. I am planning on giving them "chopper" front forks, and a sidecar with a turrent mounted TLRL. I think it will look great, but I am concerend about taking them to tournies and having them banned because they look like bikes (actually trikes) and not buggies. What do you guys think?

As always, you want to contact any TO ahead of time to clear any conversions.

In my opinion though, go for it! Shouldn't be a problem with anybody but the exceptional jerkwad. Considering the current wartrakk model has a motorcycle front end, I'd say you're totally justified.

Then, base a single grot model pushing a single tire. Then when somebody whines that your buggy only has three wheels, plop him down next to it. Problem solved!

If I knew, I'd tell you.

I personally wouldn't do this. If your going to make them look like bikes- use them as bikes.....
Sorry this is a bit of criticism but I just wouldn't do it...

or make them into quad bikes? That would look a bit more buggyish, and actually easier to model and make the same size as a GW buggy

Tires are a little too close together, imo.

I was wondering until I saw the inspiration photo, but now, I wonder no more. That is a sweet conversion that should not be confused for a kopta, or any other ork vehicle for that matter. I don't see any problems with using it as a buggy. Do it! And show us!

I agree that spreading the front tires a little wider would be good. Do that, and make a wheel cover thingy over the top, and it would be excellent! It may even work to just add wheel covers to make it look wider in the front... hmm. You just need an antenna with a little fox / racoon tail hanging off and you'll be rockin!

In case you are worried because TOs can have grudges/odd prejudices like anyone else, you could simply check. You could even get a written response. Use it to smack any fool that may try to pull a TFG move. Note also that if the tournament says anything about "best appearance", etc, then that is encouraging creativity, so should cover you. Honestly, I wouldn't worry for a conversion like this. But I guess it does all depend on the scene where you play.

The quick, "Hey, these are my buggies" explanation for your opponent would be the final suggestion. More for courtesy than anything else, because there should really be no confusion. The response you get could make your "best opponent" ranking very easy to figure out!

And really, as long as you don't make your buggies and your warbikes look the same, there shouldn't be any confusion. After all, most players armies are much, much more cookie cutter than Orks. At least you can tell at a glance who the Nob is (hint, he's the tall one) vs, say, Space Marines, where it's nigh impossible to even tell the ICs unless they're kitted out and slathered in Purity Seals, or Eldar (I still don't know how they tell their own armies apart- so many colors!)

And if they're outfitted with obvious rokkits, there's even less of a chance to be mistaken.

Nice to use as bikes. If you are going to use them as warbuggys you might think of putting a gunner ork on the rear of them some how.

As an ork, I find the simplest conversion is the best conversion. But once again, the more extravagant the better. I made a deffkopta fieldable as a waaagh bike by gluing two wheels to the front and back end, keeping the flying gubbins. If its a deffkopta, I just place it on its hover base.

I like it. If you're keeping the rotor base on top (and it does look good) then personally i'd mount the weapons up there too - if you have some spare rokkits, that is.

Re the width, the standard wartrakk is only 3.5 cm wide, so arguably your width is already enough, but going a little wider would help the cool 'dune buggy' look and maybe reduce whining from rules lawyers. But really, so long as the models are clearly unlike any bikes or koptas in your army, you should be fine.
