Subject: 2250 - High Elves, Double DP with Archmage

I'm going with High Elves as my next army after Tomb Kings. It's going to be more of an Art project than anything, but obviously I want any flaws in my list ironed out. This is not a perfect list, but a strong one that plays to a style that I like. I'm interested to hear people's reasoning on certain elements of it.
- Archmage
- lvl 4
- Elven Steed
- Book of Hoeth
I can swap his items around, giving him say a silver wand, ring of fury instead. It's enough to know that I will need to buy and paint an archmage model.
- Mage
- lvl 2
- Seer Staff
Again, I know I want a second mage, but whether he takes the seer staff or a bound item, I can just play around with that when it's game time.
- Noble
- Lance, dragon armour, shield, Barded Steed
- Radiant Gem of Hoeth
- Battle Standard Bearer
Potentially I could take the battle banner, and not the radiant gem, but this is what i'll be trying out first. I do know that I want a BSB, however.
- 5x Dragon Princes
- Full Command
- Banner of Elyrion
That banner rules, definately worth it for this unit I think.
- 5x Dragon Princes
- Full Command
- War Banner
- Helm of Fortune
The unit champion has a re-rollable 1+ save, so he'll be good in challenges (possibly protecting the BSB from a challenge in the process.
- 15x White Lions
- Full Command
- Banner of Sorcery
- The Skeinsliver
With the skeinsliver and a small army, I could be getting +2 to the roll for the first turn. With a fragile army like this one, I would like that. Sorcery banner is a must
- 2x Tiranoc Chariots
- 10 Archers
- 10 Archers
- 3x RBT
2231
I only really need feedback on the following things, so be concise with any comments, answering the following questions;
-Archers could be upgraded to Sea Guard with shields. I love this idea because it would make them look cooler (this is an art project remember), and they get 4+ saves in front combat or spears in 2 ranks if they are on a hill or something. But I would have to find the points somewhere, my spare 19 isn't enough for all that. Archers or Sea guard??
-I could drop a chariot and get an eagle or a 4th bolt thrower! I like both those ideas. Do I need two chariots when I already have two units of princes? Let's hear people's reasoning on this.
-The white lions are brilliant for their 3+ save against shooting - fantastic mage bunker. I love stubborn and woodsmen rules too. Do I really need 15 of them? Reasoning on this as well please.
-The spirit of this list could probably be captured without using two units of dragon princes. That would save me a ton of points. Also, dropping musicians from the princes would net points too. Is there something that would be a more valuable investment?
-If nothing gets changed, what should the remaining 19 points go into?

I assume your noble is going with one of the dragon princes. Yes I reread your post.
Where are you going to put the mages?
That is an impressive book but is it work 100 points? If you want the book then a better choice would be to take Teclis. That is a personnel choice but I dont know where you would get the points and keep your cavalry.
But this is an paint project. Teclis model is just cool, I have two.
Use one unit of dragon princes and one of silver helms to give you extra painting chances.
As a painting project you should include as many different units as you can. Therefore I set of archers and one of LSG would look nice.
White lions are a very good choice and can paint up very nicely.

As far as your list looks it will probably work providing that is your playing style. Hopefully you will keep us informed with pictures and how your list is doing. And remember it is about having fun and do not change you list after one slaughter. Because victory is just around the corner. Of course sometimes the corner is a ways down the road.

It's not JUST a paint project, i'll eventually want to play and win with this list just like any other army. Special characters are a nono for me, I refuse to use them out of principle. Also, it's no point painting them up if I can't use them in a tournament, which is the ultimate goal.

Sorry that I implied that it was only an art project. I was more or less following your post.
A lot of people feel that way about special characters. I have yet to go to a tournment althought in April I will be trying to play in a local one. They use a comp list and special characters are really punished.
All I can say is that they are in the army book, hence they must be legal. Other than that who care. My Bretonnias have special characters and I have yet to use them. I do own them though because the models are so neat.

I think the guy who won the LVGT a year ago with HE's used a small unit of Sea Guard to good effect - basically dictating the purpose of the unit depending on the game/opponent. I wouldn't do two units of Sea Guard, but having one might not hurt.
Chariot + DP unit tag-teams can be awesome. Assuming a 5 strong unit of DPs, that's 10 + D6 S5 hits on the charge. Depending on how you envision running the list, you could run 2 packs of DP + Chariots or just run the bunch of them together (in which case, you may not need the 2nd chariot). Admittedly, eagles are great at helping redirect enemy units to get a charge off with your cavalry and chariots, and given that you already have 3 RBTs, I'd recommend an eagle over a 4th RBT if you choose to go that route.
I would suggest to keep DP units as cheap as possible where possible. Every loss hurts the unit's effectiveness a lot, and if they suffer from rubber-lance syndrome, you're likely to be losing the standard in the units. I highly recommend the Battle Banner - it's become invaluable to me as of late, and can make a less than successful DP charge an overwhelming charge. If you're taking two units of DPs, drop the command for the one not being joined by the BSB and bulk them up to 6 strength. With proper support from a chariot, they probably won't need any of the command. At the least, limit command to essentials (Banner of Ellyrian waving Standard Bearer if you're dead-set on it).
Personally, I prefer Phoenix Guard over White Lions for an anvil unit, but this block of WL should work out quite well as well. You don't want these guys running away, so a bigger block is preferable over a smaller one, imo. Try to go for a frontage of 6 or 7 with these guys, though - those extra hits will help a lot.
Depending on what you would be facing, it could be wise to invest in Fear/Terror negation (Tournament settings tend to run heavy Demon/Undead, so if you're intending on taking this list to tournies, definitely find some points for the Lion Standard, at the least).
