Just curious about why no one uses chainsabres on they're Striking Scorpion Exarchs. It seems to me to be a decent choice with rerolling both to hit and to wound. Am I missing something?

After looking at chainsabres... it does not say that they count as scorpion chainswords... so sure, you get to re-roll hits and wounds, but only at str 3.
@omar can't combine the bonuses from two different special close combat weapons, and I'm pretty sure the exarch can't have both the claw and the biting blade anyways.

yes he can , read the codex very carefully , it says that the PISTOL can be changed for the claw , and the CHAINSWORD can be exchanged for the blade , why should he be able to take both if he can't use them both ?

If he can take them both, he can choose to use one or the other, but not both in the same CC phase, as they are both special CC weapons.

hmmmm ... i'm reading the rulebook and it says nothing of 2 special weapons not being able to be combineable ( is that a word ? )
and in the entry of the energy fist/claw , it says that only the S of the statline is taken and OTHER BONUSSES are taken after doubling the S , meaning it can be done

actually, 2 special weapons cannot be used to gain the extra attack, ill try and find the eldrad thread from earlier, someone posted a page number for the rule

so , who is right ? it would be important to know such things , it's the difference between a dead commander and a wounded one

Think about it like this. Space marine vet sgt has a powerfist and close combat weapon. He can use one, or the other, just not both at the same time

Corrected... and also note that the only way you get an extra attack with a PF/ CF/ LC is if you have a pair of them equipped.

My Eldar opponent uses chainsabres on his SS exarch. I suggested he take the Claw, but it seems the chainsabres do dish out a fair bit of damage.
Plus he's converted them in a really cool way!

it's not about getting +1 attacks , it's about getting the extra S with the biting blade.

page 42 explains why you don't get an extra attack for wielding two special weapons, unless they are two of the same.
If you carry both power claw and biting blade then you have to choose which one you are using, you don't benefit from both at the same time.
That is per assault phase.

awwwww it would have been a soooooo cool commander killer !
whatever , we still got fire dragons for that job .
just a question , the claw has a pistol in it , and the exarch has a pistol in his other hand . does that give him an extra attack ?

I like them. Yes, you can take the other simultaneously but you have to choose which one you want. Biting Blade at I6 or Claw that ignores saves.
The Chainsabres at 5? points are cheaper and you can still take the Exarch Powers. I like the Chainsabres. Still, in 5th edition you need to actually kill your opponent in close combat. In a tournament I would probably take the Claw/ Biting combo or just the Claw. The Exarch _is_ I6.

The claw has a shuriken catapult not a pistol. Their is a debate going on about whether or not you can"choose"to use the pistol instead of,lets say the biting blade, for the extra attack. If you do have both equiped.

My main point was just that chainsabres are essentially like a personal doom/guide for the exarch while still allowing him to get the extra attack and strike at initiative 6. You have to give up one or the other with the claw/ biting blade. It just seemed like a viable option to me to strike a middle ground. Obviously you can't instant kill anything or attack tanks like the bb, or ignore armor saves like the claw. YMMV, obviously.

The problem with chainsabres is that they're only str 3.

Scorpains claw for anything with a 2+ save and/or high T
Biting blade for vehicles, specifically walkers.
Yes you can take both and no you dont loose any attacks as an exarch already lost them upon taking the scorpains claw.
Best way to equip a SS exarch.
