I am considering running a small unit of HE Sea Guard in my tournament army. I read in another thread that somebody at the LVGT had run a small unit with success. I like the idea of having a small multi-purpose unit, but I'm unsure at to what point your wasting points. I'm considering a unit of 10-14 with a musician.

This is not a Sea Guard flame thread, if you feel "strongly" that they are a total waste then just recommend against them. Your opinion is appreciated.

Anthony Spiers had a 10-man unit of Sea Guard in his 2008 LVGT winning HE list.

I think 10-12 is the optimal size. Depending on the situation, you can have them line up to shoot, or keep them ranked up on a hill to maximize both shooting and combat ability. Probably not worth going past this size because they're so pricey. 10 of them are (relatively) cheap w/ respect to archers, since you gain armor and shield and spears for 2 more points, which means that they won't get slaughtered if they get charged by something not too tough. I still think I prefer the extra long-bow vs. bow range and points savings of the archers, but I can see the appeal of a small unit of Sea Guard if you want a more flexible unit.

I've tooled around with a unit of 15 with full command. If you can get them on a hill, they're decent in a row of 8, then a row of 7 for shooting and then reforming them on the turn before they would take a charge gives you a 5x3 block with 16 ASF attacks paired with a 10 shot stand and shoot reaction. They're, imo, very effective at breaking any toughness 3 rank and file shmoes like goblins and whatnot. Against anything with any armor save better than a 5+/4+ or toughness 4 or better, their wimpy elf wrists are incapable of causing enough damage to warrant their use..

I do not like them but I am beganning to think about using a small group of them. Probably only ten as I would be replacing an archer unit with them. I want to test out my new close combat list several times before I make any changes with them.
